Job Duties:
The chosen candidate will perform the following repairs and/or maintenance of boats and similar vessels:
Test engines, transmissions, propellers, and navigational and related systems to diagnose malfunctions
This position has been designated as Alpha I and the incumbent may be required to report to work during inclement weather, regardless of the city's operational status.
CDL Hiring Bonus: Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $2,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
$500 with first paycheck
$500 first pay period following six-month interim evaluation (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
$1,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. May require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). May require a State Inspectors License. May require current Refrigerant Recycling Certificate. May require Brake Inspector Certification. May be required to complete Confined Space Entry training.

Preferences:
• Prior Professional Marine Mechanic experience at a marine repair facility (Boats, In-Board/Out-Board Motors, Watercraft, Jet Propelled). Mercury Verado and Four-Stroke Certs., and Classic Certifications; Cummins Marine
• Experience operating vessels up to 50 feet in length
• Proven experience communicating with customers and vendors
• Experience using computerized work order software programs
• Mercury Marine Certification
• Class A CDL
• Virginia State Inspector’s License
