The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is hiring a Traffic Signs & Markings Mechanic II

Duties for this position include but not limited to:

-          Installation and maintenance of City highway traffic signs.

-          Installation and maintenance of roadway pavement markings, and roadway pre-marking to prepare area for painting.

-          Fabrication of highway traffic signs using specialized equipment and machines.

-          Installation and maintenance of work zone traffic control devices used for emergency detours and provide traffic control support during large Special Events.

-          Assist in maintaining inventory of material supplies.

-          Direct the work of field crew in the absence of supervisor.

-          Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as deemed by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

-          Intricate knowledge of City, State, and Federal Highway traffic standards, guidelines, and regulations, applicable to maintaining and installing traffic signs, fabrication of signs.

-          Intricate knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of roadway pavement markings.

Knowledge-Skills-Abilities 

-          Intricate knowledge of City, State, and Federal Highway traffic standards, guidelines, and regulations, applicable to maintaining and installing traffic signs, fabrication of signs.

-          Intricate knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of roadway pavement markings.

-          Knowledge of work zone safety guidelines and work zone safety traffic control devices.

-          Knowledge and skill in completing daily  work orders using computer, laptop or field touch pad to document labor, materials and equipment used in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs and/or painting or highway markings.

-          Skill in safe and efficient operation of trucks under all weather conditions which include snow, sleet, rain, high water, and winds.

-          Operation of compressors, air hammers, hydraulic breakers.

-          Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, as well as to provide clear instructions to subordinates.

-          Work in extreme heat and cold conditions.

-          Lift and carry weight up to 100 lbs.

-          Observe safety procedures, as well as to ensure that subordinates comply with applicable safety measures.

-          Perform basic math calculations required to complete daily reports and compute material quantities for job.

 

**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **

 

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC)

*CDL Hiring Bonus - The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

  • $1,000 with first paycheck
  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus five (5) years experience in traffic control or closely related work which utilizes the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and associated with such positions as sign fabricator, sign installation mechanic, or pavement marking mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. A valid Commercial driver's license (CDL) may be required. This position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Preferences:

- Traffic Signs and Marking Mechanic I or related work experience.
- Supervisory experience
- IMSA Signs/Markings Level 1 – Associate Signs and Markings Specialist Certification
- Complex Sign Fabrication and Sign Silk Screen Experience
- Sign installation experience
- Pavement Marking Installation experience
- Experience completing daily logs and work orders in a work management database.
- Work Zone/Traffic Control experience or certification
- Experience using construction tools and equipment
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
