Job Duties:
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents.
Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for a Utility Mechanic Supervisor position within our Water Distribution team.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: This is an on-site work assignment. Remote work/work from home is not offered for this position. Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. NOTE: Possession of and maintaining a valid VA or NC Commercial Drivers License, Class A (CDL-A) with tanker endorsement is a requirement of this position and is non-negotiable.

NOTE: Possession of a Class A CDL with Air Brake and Tank Endorsements is a requirement of employment in this position and is non-negotiable. Class A CDL holders are provided a yearly $4,000 stipend ($153.85 per pay period - every two weeks) added to your salary

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Any equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent to High school or G.E.D. plus five (5) years experience in utility maintenance and construction, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

Preferences:
Knowledge of regulatory standards and requirements of a municipal water distribution system
Knowledge of computerized work order management system
Knowledge of utility marking standards
Knowledge of VDOT requirements for traffic control and safe work zone practices, and excavation safety
Knowledge of equipment, pumps, utility construction equipment
Working knowledge of a potable water distribution systems operation
Experience supervising multiple crews engaged in multiple tasks
Experience operating heavy equipment and the ability to teach others safe operating practices
Experience planning/organizing jobs for employees
Experience in a team environment
Special Instructions:
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
