The City of Virginia Beach’s Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in field of study.

Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.

Applications received will be considered for Fall and Winter internship opportunities that become available. We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists. 

We are currently hiring interns for the following internship opportunities: Management Analyst.  Additional details are outlined below.

Health & Wellness Internship:

The Virginia Beach Fire Department’s Safety Bureau prioritizes employee health and safety through a comprehensive plan aimed at eliminating hazards and minimizing risks. The Health and Safety Coordinator manages the Fire Department’s Wellness Center, supports police wellness initiatives, and leads fitness evaluations, group workouts, and training for firefighters and police officers. They are searching for a Fall Health and Wellness Intern to assist in their goal. 

Required Education: Graduate level student working towards degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field.

Duties:

  • Assist with enhancing wellness initiatives, new hire fitness evaluations, and 
    recruit physical training sessions for police and fire.
  • Attending fire station and police precinct wellness visits.
  • Leading morning or evening workout sessions for incumbent first 
    responders.
  • Assist with data collection and entry.
  • Minor housekeeping duties*

Expected Duration: 6 Months

Expected Schedule / Hours: 20-30 hours per week.

Management Analyst Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Office of Performance & Accountability is in search of a Management Analyst for the fall. The Management Analyst will work onsite and as part of the internship, the Analyst will have at least one one-on-one meeting with the City Manager and Deputy City Manager.

Required Education: Pursuing a Masters in Public Administration

Duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Attend various departmental and city-wide meetings with OPA staff.
  • Shadow various OPA staff for mentorship.
  • Assist OPA analysts with the development, analysis, and use of performance measures and related reporting.
  • Assist with collecting, preparing, analyzing, synthesizing, reconciling, and translating performance measures, benchmarking, and related data (qualitative and quantitative) into strategic recommendations and action plans.
  • Perform in-depth research and analysis, including the review of available datasets to analyze ways to enhance City operations and
    effectiveness. Develop data visualizations using Microsoft products, such as Excel and Microsoft BI.
  • Assist with analysis of survey data.
  • Assist with special projects, such as research, data collection, and drafting documents.
  • Perform a variety of professional and technical duties in support of the City’s performance management, strategic planning, and process/continuous improvement efforts.

Special Requirements: Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings) including weekends and holidays, be available to work overtime, and work at various library locations as necessary to meet operational needs.
