The Commercial / Mission Critical Journeyman Electrician works under the direction of a Foreman or Superintendent and performs the installation, alteration, addition, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems, conductors, equipment, and associated materials. This position may lead and direct a crew of one to five helpers or apprentices. The employee may be assigned within the J1 through J3 classification range based on verified experience, technical proficiency, leadership ability, productivity, and project requirements.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interprets electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, blueprints, specifications, and installation details.

• Plans and lays out assigned work, identifies labor and material needs, and prepares materials and equipment for installation.

• Performs underground layout, raceway installation, grounding, rough-in, and aboveground electrical installations.

• Determines conductor, cable, raceway, and conduit sizing in accordance with drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.

• Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit using measuring devices, hand tools, threaders, and manual or mechanical benders.

• Installs and connects feeders, branch circuits, busway, cable tray, panels, transformers, switchgear, controls, and related electrical distribution equipment.

• Performs switchgear, equipment, cable, and conductor terminations in accordance with approved procedures and manufacturer requirements.

• Installs and connects power-supply wiring, cables, conduit, and electrical equipment in new and existing facilities.

• Performs electrical testing and troubleshoots circuits, systems, controls, and equipment to identify and resolve installation or performance issues.

• Performs rigging and job setup for assigned or supervised tasks within training and authorization limits.

• Operates the hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, lifts, and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.

• Directs assigned helpers and apprentices and provides instruction in work methods, electrical principles, applicable codes, tool safety, and proper equipment operation.

• Monitors assigned work for quality, productivity, code compliance, and conformance with project drawings and specifications.

• Coordinates work with supervisors, employees, clients, subcontractors, and other trades to support project sequencing and schedule requirements.

• Follows and enforces company, project, client, OSHA, NFPA 70E, and applicable electrical-code requirements.

• Reports safety concerns, installation conflicts, damaged equipment, material shortages, and potential schedule impacts to the supervisor.

• Performs other project-related duties and assignments as directed by the supervisor.

• Meets attendance standards and follows all late-arrival and absence-notification procedures.

CLASSIFICATION RANGE

• J1: Performs licensed journeyman-level installation, layout, terminations, testing, and troubleshooting under the direction of a Foreman or Superintendent. May provide task-level guidance to helpers or apprentices.

• J2: Interprets drawings, develops crew work plans, organizes job setup and materials, and directs a crew of up to five helpers or apprentices. Monitors daily safety, quality, and productivity for assigned work.

• J3: Performs senior-level journeyman work and leads complex installations with limited supervision. Anticipates labor, material, access, coordination, and sequencing needs; resolves field issues within assigned authority; and supports the development of less-experienced employees.

• Final classification is determined by the company based on documented experience, demonstrated proficiency, leadership capability, project needs, and the licensing requirements that apply to the work location.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Current Journeyman Electrician license recognized by the jurisdiction where the work is performed.

• Completion of a qualified electrical apprenticeship program and at least 8,000 hours of documented on-the-job electrical experience, or an equivalent combination accepted by the applicable licensing authority.

• Commercial or mission-critical electrical construction experience.

• Experience on data centers, hospitals, industrial facilities, semiconductor facilities, large commercial projects, or other complex electrical projects is strongly preferred.

• Strong working knowledge of electrical theory, construction methods, tools, materials, and applicable electrical codes.

• Ability to perform construction math and apply conduit, conductor, voltage-drop, and load-calculation concepts appropriate to assigned work.

• Ability to read, interpret, and work from drawings, specifications, schedules, written instructions, and verbal direction.

• Ability to lead others, communicate expectations, and complete work safely and productively in a fast-paced construction environment.

• Ability to work scheduled overtime, nights, weekends, or alternate shifts when required by the project.

• Ability to travel or work at assigned project locations when required.

LICENSES AND TRANSPORTATION

• Current Journeyman Electrician license applicable to the assigned work location.

• Current driver's license and reliable transportation.

• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is preferred and may be required by the project.

EDUCATION

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program is required unless an equivalent path is accepted by the applicable licensing authority.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in active commercial and mission-critical construction environments and involves regular interaction with employees, clients, subcontractors, and other trades. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, at elevation, in confined or restricted areas, and in varying weather, temperature, noise, dust, and lighting conditions. Project-specific personal protective equipment and access requirements apply.

• Understand spatial relationships and visualize two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects for blueprint reading, layout, and geometry.

• Operate or travel in a passenger vehicle or commercial vehicle when authorized and required.
