Job Summary:

Primarily assists surgeon and surgical staff during procedures in the scope and role of RNFA. The Registered Nurse First Assist is a perioperative nurse that functions as a first assistant during surgical operations and has achieved certification with appropriate practicum hours. The RNFA works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members and intraoperatively practices at the direction of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub person or circulator. Secondarily, the RNFA can assist with other unit operations such as patient care.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Current California RN license
  • Current BLS provider card
  • RNFA Certification preferred
  • CNOR preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required
  • RNFA training program (certificate) with required practicum hours or two years’ experience in RNFA role

Experience:

  • Three years’ experience scrubbing and circulating as an RN in the operating room
  • Credentialled by Medical Staff Office

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures Demonstrates leadership skills and collaborative skills
  • Knowledge of surgical assistant procedures and best practices
  • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
  • Effective two way communication skills (listening and speaking); strong interpersonal skills with staff, physicians, patients and family.
