LOCATION: Remote Location Available; Available AZ and CST Hours

Company Description

Great Hearts is a nonprofit network of public charter schools dedicated to improving education nationwide through classical preparatory K–12 academies. On January 4th, 2021, Great Hearts launched a new virtual classical academy to serve students in Texas.  Great Hearts Online  is fully enrolled to the delight and satisfaction of over 500 students and their families.

Great Hearts Online is the core educational offering, and we are thinking bigger. In Latin, civitas is a word describing a body of citizens who constitute a state or a commonwealth; a civitas is a body of people imparting shared responsibility, a common purpose, and a sense of community toward greater citizenship. What we are building is a  Great Hearts Civitas : a national body of families and students, connected by a common purpose, in community and citizenship together. In the coming years, we will offer excellence in virtual classical education with a focus on tight-knit online and in-person communities in pursuit of a national GH Civitas .

Position Summary

The instructional designer is an integral part of the Learning Design team, collaborating with curriculum experts, the technology team, teachers, and school leaders to develop world class online learning solutions. This intermediate-level position is responsible for ensuring our online classroom is every bit as welcoming, engaging, and effective as the physical classrooms in brick-and-mortar Great Hearts academies. That will involve designing and implementing engaging tools for use in online classrooms, leading teacher trainings, and ensuring the Learning Management System works correctly, looks sharp, and is easy to use.

The ideal candidate is a designer in the truest sense – part social scientist, part artisan, part mechanic. This person loves hard questions, doggedly pursuing answers, developing creative solutions, and iterating until they’ve either solved the problem or thought of a better idea. They can also grind on some monotonous need-get-this-done-now work when the situation calls for. Finally, we are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about technology while still being capable of empathizing with skeptical or frustrated families, students, and teachers. If you are a both/and kind of person who wants to work hard, learn a ton, and make genuine contributions to a developing field, this is the job for you. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer will have roles and responsibilities aligned to the below. This individual will need to balance high-level strategy with nitty-gritty rolling up sleeves in a startup environment.

  1. Assist faculty in the development of Canvas courses
  2. Modify, revise, and verify the integrity of courses
  3. Provides user support to meet faculty, staff, and student needs.      
  4. Create training materials including print/web documents and videos for faculty, students, and families
  5. Train faculty on Canvas use including basic functionality, school-specific workflows, and best practices
  6. Collaborate with faculty to design educational solutions and develop resources using Google Workspace, Nearpod, and other tools
  7. Research, evaluate, and recommend educational software, websites, and tools
  8. Perform similar or related duties as assigned or required
  9. Ability to travel up to 20% of time (during non-pandemic times)

Qualifications, Competencies, and Strengths

  • Required Education and Experience :
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field
    • Three (3) years of experience related to the above-described duties
    • Highly organized, flexible and must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding, deadline-oriented environment, while managing competing demands simultaneously
    • A track record of developing creative, effective educational or communication materials incorporating clear writing and crisp graphic design
    • Proficient in Adobe suite or equivalent
    • Proficient in MS Suite
    • Proficient in HTML coding
  • Preferred Experience
    • LMS administration (ideally Canvas) including course authoring
    • Teaching, tutoring, or other educational work with K-12 students
    • Familiarity with video editing software
    • Experience with classical, liberal arts curriculum and pedagogy

Substitution Statement:

Related experience may be substituted for education, on a basis set forth and approved by the Department of Human Resources.

Type of clearance:

       Must complete Texas and Arizona Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance and background check.

Physical functions: Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 50 pounds approximately.
