Position Summary

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for performing HR-related duties on a professional level and works closely with HR management in supporting designated Academies. This position may carry out responsibilities in the following functional areas: benefits administration, employee relations, training, performance management, onboarding, policy implementation, recruitment/employment, affirmative action and employment law compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Administers various human resource plans and procedures for all Great Hearts personnel; assists in the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains the employee handbook and the policies and procedures manual.
  2. Participates in developing department goals, objectives and systems.
  3. Escalates employee relations counseling and exit interviewing.
  4. Assist with employee disciplinary action.
  5. Counsel and guide hiring managers on salary and status changes.
  6. Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings and seminars.
  7. Maintains human resource information system records and compiles reports from the database.
  8. Maintains compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations.
  9. Monitor and knowledgably respond to high volume of internal and external Human Resources inquiries.
  10. Complete personnel status changes to include compensation calculations, employment agreement generation & HRIS (UltiPro) entry.
  11. Process and complete a high volume of candidate on-boarding to include background, education and employment verifications; fingerprinting; new hire paperwork processing; data entry, etc.
  12. Process background investigations and fingerprints for volunteers and vendors.
  13. Complete Form I-9 and E-Verify entries in a timely manner.
  14. Maintain personnel and other related files.
  15. File Worker’s Compensation claims and maintain OSHA logs and related records.
  16. Process and respond timely to Unemployment Insurance claims.
  17. Commitment to customer service, confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  18. Does not supervise others, however, there is a high level of cross training involved.
  19. Additional duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications, Competencies & Strengths

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or Business Management strongly preferred.

Experience: Must have 2-5 years of general Human Resources experience required.

Special Skills:

  • Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) skills, experience with UltiPro, Adobe Acrobat, Oracle and Taleo preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of Federal and Texas employment law.
  • Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills; oriented towards detail, thoroughness, and accuracy.
  • Experienced and comfortable interacting with individuals/groups at every level of the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Achievement-oriented, have a great deal of stamina to work hard and take satisfaction from being productive.
  • Strong analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

Licenses or certifications

Licenses or certifications: PHR or SHRM-CP Certification preferred.

Type of fingerprint clearance: TXDPS fingerprint clearance.

Physical functions: Must be able to remain in a stationary (standing or sitting) position for 75%-100% of the time.

Equipment used: Frequent computer use is expected.

Work Environment: May be required to move or position equipment up to 10-15 pounds.

Travel required:

  • Must have the ability to travel locally to the various academies within the San Antonio & Irving.
  • Ability to be flexible to accommodate some evening volunteer fingerprinting at assigned academies.
