Control Engineer 5

The role of Controls Engineers is crucial in designing, developing, installing, and maintaining equipment used for monitoring and controlling systems, machinery, and processes across various industries. This includes industrial controls, water/wastewater, power controls and protection, and transportation systems. Working on state-of-the-art federal and commercial facilities, the successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of technical expertise in Controls Systems engineering, automation, and specifications development across multiple platforms.

This position is responsible for performing designing, testing, startup, and commissioning of SCADA control systems consisting of low and medium voltage electrical distribution equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, switchgear, and relays.  An understanding of sophisticated electrical distribution systems of complex electrical test equipment is required.  You will contribute to a safe working environment for co-workers and customers and help ensure the overall success of projects. 

Responsibilities include:

Design/Engineering:

  • A background in generator controls is strongly preferred for this role. Candidates should have experience in control systems, automation, and SCADA systems.  Additionally, a strong understanding of technologies like SEL Relays, IEC61850, RTAC, PLC, and control systems in data centers or microgrids is preferred.
  • Originate design documents for both large and small projects.
  • Develop narrative design documents, conduct requirements analysis, and create system functional documentation.
  • Design subsystems, including CAD/panels/layouts/wiring/SCADA screens/hardware/communications.
  • Prepare specifications and perform QA/QC and technical reviews of designs.
  • Lead programming/configuration efforts for complex automation and SCADA applications.
  • Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, RTUs, and/or HMI systems.

Testing/Troubleshooting/Deployment/Commissioning:

  • Author test plans and procedures, lead/supervise testing activities.
  • Conduct testing and commissioning of deployed systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting on service calls to existing and legacy system operators.

Maintenance:

  • Perform troubleshooting on service calls to existing and legacy system operators.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Lead proposal efforts for medium to large projects, conducting research and providing cost estimates.
  • Actively follow emerging technical trends and contribute to sector leadership.
  • Assign technical tasks to engineers and administrative staff, and coordinate with entry-level engineers.

Field Experience:

  • Read electrical and control schematics and plans.
  • Control system startup, configuration, and calibration.
  • Testing and troubleshooting of control systems.
  • Use basic electrical and machinist hand tools.
  • Utilize testing, calibration, or industry-specific tools and software.

Tools/Software:

  • Experience in computer networks.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAE Software (AutoCAD/EPLAN).
  • Familiarity with schedule management software.
  • Competence in standard office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).

Licensure/Certification:

  • Preferred but not required: certifications in one or more PLC/Automation Platforms (Schneider, Rockwell, Siemens, Niagara, etc.) and/or one or more SCADA platforms (Wonderware, Iconics, Ignition, etc.).
  • Preferred but not required: licenses/certifications include Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA), Certified Automation Professional (CAP), and Professional Engineer (PE) in a relevant field.

 Salary Range: $135,900 - $217,440
