We are actively executing projects that advance clean energy and grid reliability, including the development and construction of wind and solar projects, electrical upgrades to our hydroelectric facilities, and the modernization of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Our ongoing substation modernization efforts are enhancing grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources. As a Drafting Intern, you will work under the direction of engineers and designers to support drafting and documentation tasks for transmission, substation, and distribution projects. Responsibilities include:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Core Drafting & Design
    • Create and update CAD drawings for transmission, substation, and distribution systems.
    • Prepare layouts for electrical components and revise drawings for design changes or as-built conditions.
    • Ensure compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Documentation & Data Management
    • Organize and archive drawings in document management systems.
    • Assist with BOM extraction.
  • Collaboration & Support
    • Interpret sketches and specifications with engineers and designers.
    • Support permitting packages and construction documents.
  • Field & Quality
    • Incorporate field notes into design updates and perform basic drawing checks.
    • Occasionally visit job sites to verify dimensions or gather data.
  • Learning & Development
    • Learn utility standards and gain exposure to overhead and underground system layouts.
    • Assist with presentation materials for internal reviews or regulatory submissions.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must currently be enrolled in a two-year technical degree program in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or Pre-Engineering with an anticipated graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
    OR
  • Must be currently enrolled in an Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s degree program with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2028.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match, and/or aptitude.

DETAILS & DURATION OF INTERNSHIP:

  • This internship will report in person to Duluth, MN.
  • Expected start date: May/June 2026.
  • The internship will be full time during summer with the possibility of extending into the academic terms up until graduation.
  • ALLETE will comply with college requirements.
  • Hours and duration are subject to change based on company needs.
