Morrison Foerster LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm with 18 offices worldwide, has an opening for a Sr. Data Scientist within our Information Technology Department in our Austin, Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami , New York,  Palo Alto,  San Diego,  San Francisco ,  or Washington, D.C. office.

The Opportunity 

Guided by department and firmwide objectives and priorities and under the direction of the Director of Data Science Analytics, participates in and contributes to improving firm strategy, delivery of legal services, and operations using data science tools and techniques. Partners with the Director to develop and gain buy-in for the program strategy, identifying the individuals, resources, and tools necessary to accomplish the strategy. Ensures execution and ongoing operations of same. Along with the Director, functions as a thought leader within the firm and possesses substantial data science experience in a variety of industries and scenarios. Ensures client service and satisfaction are attained in all areas of position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Data Science Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of Data Science Analytics in leading the data science function for the firm, including strategy, management, and operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize the firm's data, data integrations, and data science tools to help produce business insights and to support project initiatives.
  • Build, maintain and enhance the firm's information resources to meet current and anticipated needs, including supporting the firm's master data model and data storage infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients at all levels within the firm and with key vendors.
  • Work in coordination with the firm's Information Governance and Security teams to ensure alignment with data validity, use, privacy, and security.
  • Work in coordination with the firm's technology teams to identify, implement, and maintain relevant technologies and data artifacts (warehouses, databases, etc.).
  • Develop predictive/explanatory models, exploratory data applications, and rapid prototypes for a wide variety of use cases and functions (matter management, knowledge management, HR, finance/billing, business development, etc.), presenting results to key stakeholders, and turning into production applications where appropriate.

Professional Development

  • Remain current in industry trends in IT and Data Science Analytics and the legal profession and continually seek relevant information and updates to expand knowledge and be a subject matter expert.
  • Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; proactively use most current technology to further teamwork, client service, and efficiency. 
  • Participate on and lead major, complex projects that increase the value of Information Technology services to clients, attorneys, timekeepers and the Firm.  

Client Service, Confidentiality, and Safety

  • Consistently promote and model the Firm's Client Service Principles in leadership, teamwork, work product, and personal interaction.
  • Ensure compliance with the Firm's Information Handling Policy, including safeguarding confidential and personal information, and reporting any suspected breach appropriately and immediately.
  • Adhere to the Firm’s General Safety Practices and any unique safety practices for department and building.

Ideal Candidate       

Education and Experience

  • Relevant master's degree in a related field (computer science, information management, etc.) preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience applying data science in one or more industries, with a demonstrated record of successful outcomes.
  • Hands on expertise with data management tools and methods: fluent in Python, R, and T-SQL.
  • Experience with Azure Cognitive Services, AWS, Tableau, Power BI, And Posit Workbench / Posit Connect a plus.
  • Technical experience conceiving, building, and launching decision support tools helpful.
  • Experience with machine learning and AI; reputation as a thought leader in the data science/machine learning/Artificial Intelligence community a plus.
  • Experience working in the legal profession, with a strong peer and vendor network.

San Francisco Salary range: $120k- $180k

Palo Alto salary range: $120k- $180k

New York salary range: $120k- $180k

Los Angeles salary range: $112k-$168k

San Diego salary range: $112k-$168k

Denver salary range: $105k-$157k
