Required Skills & Qualifications:

The position of Maternal and Child Health Specialist I oversees all staff and WIC Program operations at the WIC site. The position requires knowledge and familiarity with WIC Program rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as well as a strong background in maternal and child health. The position is responsible for coaching and mentoring staff using Motivational Interviewing and other appropriate skills and techniques. The position conducts Continuous Quality Improvement activities to maintain a high standard of nutrition and breastfeeding education and services. Supervising a site requires the development of original ideas, the ability to solve problems creatively, strong written and oral communication as well as team leadership skills.


Description of Duties

  • Implements and monitors systems and procedures for identifying, scheduling, and certifying WIC participants 
  • Supervises Nutrition Assistants, Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, and WIC Site Administrative Service Specialist, including on-site training, coaching, quality assurance;  writes and conducts work performance evaluations and routine disciplinary actions 
  • Coordinates and ensures implementation of prescribed nutrition, breastfeeding, and health education activities for WIC participants
  • Provides ongoing guidance to site staff relating to nutrition, breastfeeding, and health education as well as the certification activities of WIC participants and customer service 
  • Supervises WIC Card issuance and reporting, as well as WIC Card security and storage
  • Conducts continuous quality assurance activities of WIC Program participant records in WIC WISE according to State and local agency protocols
  • Monitors compliance to WIC WISE related policies and procedures
  • Ensures completion of weekly and monthly reports on program operations and WIC CARD activities
  • Conducts nutritional assessment of persons (including staff members) undergoing WIC Program certification, including nutritional assessment and  review of medical records for health risk determination and appropriate counseling and referral
