Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • GED or high school Diploma / Bachelors
  • RVT license and/or LATG certified
  • Experience working in clinical and laboratory setting for at least five years.
  • Must be able to recognize animal health problems and communicate these problems to the veterinarian.
  • Must be able to ascertain what constitutes an emergency situation and be able to take appropriate action.
  • Requires special knowledge of diseases in laboratory animal species.
  •  Will receive instruction from the veterinarian concerning the diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Be able to extract and comprehend pertinent information from proposed research protocols.
  • Be able to use a microscope.
  •  Must be able to induce, maintain and recover animals from anesthesia.
  •  Be able to perform endotracheal intubation
  •  Be able to monitor depth of anesthesia.
  • Collect stool, urine, blood and body tissues.
  • Give injections.
  •  Perform fecal examinations and heartworm tests.
  •  Be able to properly handle and restrain all laboratory animal species.
  • Animal care experience in a research and animal laboratory setting.
  • Animal care experience in a veterinary clinical setting.
  • Must be capable of properly handling and restraining all species of common laboratory animals, have no abnormal fear of any common laboratory species

 

Description of Duties

  • Review, comprehend and comply with all standard operating procedures (SOP) and quality assurance standards pertaining to laboratory animals for research.
  • Must be capable of properly handling and restraining all species of common laboratory animals, have no abnormal fear of any common laboratory species
  • Ability to work with small and large animals
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal regulations
  •  Perform animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals
  • Ability to administer treatments to animals per veterinarian instructions
  • Must be able to clean and change animal cages per the standard operating procedures, instructions on researchers’ protocols, U.S.D.A. and NIH guidelines, and any other requirements
  •  Keep accurate and complete records
  •  Perform cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms and equipment
  • Be able to work alone and as a member of team
  • Ability to make good judgement calls
  • Ability to detect small changes in animal behavior and/or health
  • Attention to detail is critical for this position
  • Early morning shift and weekends
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  •  Ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadline
  • Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner
  •  Demonstrated cooperative behavior and positive-problem solving and conflict resolution skills
