GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY:  Perform automated and/or manual clinical analysis on specimens submitted for testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Level 1

  • Perform daily start-up calibration and QC on analyzers and equipment.
  • Accurately perform calibrations and run controls. 
  • Perform assays, record, review, and validate results.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on automated and manual equipment.
  • Perform R & D activity on new methods and/or equipment as assigned by supervisor.
  • Assist in monitoring inventory.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and solving problems.
  • Comply with CRL and departmental SOP’s.
  • Comply with OSHA and other safety manual procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with co-workers and other laboratory departments.
  • Keep work area neat and clean.
  • Maintain and protect the confidentiality of all CRL, CRL subsidiaries, legal entities and client information.
  • Be able to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations that would apply to this job.

Level 2

·         Perform all duties required of Testing Personnel – Level 1

·         Proven competency in more than one discipline.

o   Disciplines are defined as:

§  Chemistry

§  Special Chemistry

§  Urinalysis

§  Oral Fluids

§  Dried Blood Spot

§  Hematology

§  Molecular

§  Heavy Metals

o   Competency and proficiency will be demonstrated as follows:

§  Must be trained on all instrumentation in that discipline.

§  Must have performed competency assessment.

§  Must have performed at least 1 round of proficiency testing.

§  Must have demonstrated this competency and proficiency for 6 months.

§  Must continually demonstrate competency on an on-going basis.

§  Must follow all SOP’s.

§  Must perform basic maintenance, calibration, an quality control on all instrumentation within a discipline.

  •          Failure to demonstrate proficiency and competency will result in removal of Level 2 classification.

Level 3

·         Perform all duties required of Testing Personnel Level 2

·         Proven competency in two or more business units

o   Business units are defined as:

§  General Laboratory

§  Toxicology

o   Competency and proficiency will be demonstrated as follows:

§  Must be fully trained and signed off as competent in each business unit.

§  Must have performed competency assessment.

§  Must have performed at least 1 round of proficiency testing.

§  Must have demonstrated this competency and proficiency for 6 months.

§  Must continually demonstrate competency on an on-going basis.

§  Must follow all SOP’s.

§  Must perform basic maintenance, calibration, and quality control on the instrumentation within each business unit.

·         Failure to demonstrate proficiency and competency will result in removal of Level 3 classification.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  A Doctoral, Master’s, Bachelor’s, or Associate’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science, or high school diploma with required experience.

EXPERIENCE – Moderate Complexity Testing: 

High School Diploma:        a) Successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks and served as a medical laboratory specialist; OR

b) Appropriate training/experience as specified in 42CFR493.1423

  

High Complexity Testing: 

Associate Degree and High School Diploma:  training/experience as specified in 42CFR493.1489

  

Acting Supervisor: 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution or equivalent.

Experience:  4 years of pertinent laboratory experience.

The following physical attributes are required for this position:

  •          Regularly moving around the laboratory
  •          Close vision requirements due to computer work
  •          Repetitive use of hands, fingers, wrists, and elbows for operating a computer and telephone
  •          Reaching, including above the shoulder
  •          Bending or stooping
  •          Pushing and pulling of large carts, trash bags, and specimen bags
  •          Lifting, up to 35 pounds
  •      The ability to discriminate between different colors visually is considered an essential function for the position for those who perform tasks that require it.

EQUIPMENT:  Basic laboratory equipment and personal protective equipment; PC and communications equipment.  

OTHER:  Overtime on demand.  Meet department productivity and quality standards.  Rotating weekend work is required. Specimens consist of body fluids and must be regarded as potentially infections. Exposure to caustics, flammables, solvents, carcinogens, and reactive compounds.
