The City of Virginia Beach Development Services Center (DSC) with the Department of Planning and Community Development is seeking a Planner II to join our team. Duties:

  • Performs a variety of technical and professional City Planning research and analysis duties. Accurately interprets and appropriately applies codes, policies, laws and regulations related to subdivision, zoning, land use and development.
  • Work involves providing detailed review of subdivision plats, easements, agreements and other legal documents typically associated with land development.
  • Coordinate the compilation of comments received from other City review agencies and communicate with attorneys, land surveyors, professional engineers, developers, property agents and others.
  • Review and comment on residential, commercial and industrial site plans and subdivision plans for compliance with various City ordinances as they relate to subdivision and easement requirements. Provide information and support regarding the development review process to the public and other City staff as requested. Answer questions regarding zoning, subdivision and site plan ordinances for the public, consultants/developers and other City staff as requested.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
  • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Architecture, Political Science or related field and two (2) years of experience utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with such positions as Planner or Landscape Architect OR any combination of related education (above high school level) and years of experience equivalent to six (6) years. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications: Masters degree in Urban/Regional planning.

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies

Preferences:

BA or BS in Urban Planning, Geography, Surveying, Real Estate Law or related field.
MS in Urban Planning.
1 yr. experience with subdivision plat, legal document review and/or preparation.
1 yr. experience with real estate/court related research for legal document review or preparation
1 yr. experience with municipal development codes pertaining to subdivision and land development.
1 yr. experience in reviewing site plans and subdivision construction plans.
AICP certification, licensed land surveyor

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
