Job Duties:

The Department of Agriculture is seeking a Planner II-Agricultural Reserve Program Coordinator. Duties will include:

  • Perform a variety of mid-level professional city planning, research and analysis duties.  Possess in-depth knowledge of the agricultural community and land preservation    programs.
  • Oversee the Agricultural Reserve Program with responsibilities that include but are not limited to application process and follow-up, reporting, marketing, promotion, and    education.
  • Process Agricultural Reserve Program, ARP, applications in a timely manner by working within timelines and deadlines established for the many stages of the application. 
  • Formulate acceptable Agricultural Advisory Commission and City Council Agenda Reports
  • Formulate acceptable professional agricultural related reports and documents
  • Communicate with other staff members, individuals in other departments and the public in order that effective working relationships can be established and maintained
  • Prepare reports and studies accurately and timely
  • Effectively coordinate the interest and activities of various local, regional, and state agencies regarding areas of land preservation, the environment, and intergovernmental    relations.
  • Assist the Rural Community Coordinator in promoting agricultural programs, interpret soil surveys, topographic maps, and aerial maps utilizing GIS Program.
  • Attend evening and weekend meetings as needed.
  • Assist with Department of Agriculture events as needed
  • Knowledge of the local farming systems, culture, soils, and soil interpretation
  • Knowledge of the local crops, basic City ordinances and regulation pertaining to the rural area. 
  •  Knowledge of basic housing and building regulations, terminology, standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of natural areas such as wetlands, forest, and waterways in the rural area, and Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • Knowledge of the land appraisal process.
  • Read and interpret surveys, engineering/development plans and formulate recommendations. 
  • Conduct on site meetings when necessary. 
  • Preparing and presenting both written and oral reports in a concise manner. 

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Bachelors degree in Planning, Geography, Urban Studies, Architecture, Political Science or related field and two (2) years of experience utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with such positions as Planner or Landscape Architect OR any combination of related education (above high school level) and years of experience equivalent to six (6) years. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Bachelor’s degree in an Agricultural related field, Business Administration, or Marketing. General knowledge of farming systems, rural culture, soils, forest, and crops. General knowledge of City ordinances and regulations that pertain to the rural area, and the practice of land use planning.
