The City of Virginia Beach Public Works-Fleet Management Heavy Duty Shop is currently hiring a Mechanic Technician II.

Representative work duties include but are not limited to:

·       Perform maintenance on Heavy-Duty vehicles such as oil changes, lubrication, safety checks, and battery checks.

·       Perform repairs such as minor/major tune-ups, replacing water pumps, hydraulic lines and hoses, and hydraulic trailer brakes.

·      Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical systems and electric over hydraulic controls, Repair de-watering pumps and diesel engines.

·        Perform hydraulic system, repairs including hydrostatic.

·        Perform repairs of Heavy-Duty hydraulic brakes, air brakes (for 25-ton off-road dump trucks), wet-line brakes, and Rockwell Q-Type brakes.

·        Service/repair Allison transmissions.

·        Perform other Heavy-Duty vehicle/equipment related maintenance.

·        Performs State Inspections if licensed.

Position Requirements:

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

This position may require that employee wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. 

THIS IS AN ALPHA I POSITION REQUIRING THE EMPLOYEE TO REPORT DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER EVENTS AND OTHER EMERGENCY OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Please Note: This position requires the incumbent obtain a valid 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification and CDL within the first year of employment (the probationary period).

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Completion of eighth (8) grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. May require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). May require a State Inspectors License. May require current Refrigerant Recycling Certificate. May require Brake Inspector Certification. May be required to complete Confined Space Entry training.

Preferences:

• Experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic
• Experience repairing diesel engines.
• Experience working on Cat/Cummins/International brands
• Class 5 to class 8 truck experience
• Air brake experience
• Commercial Driver License
• Virginia State Inspector License
• ASE Certifications

Special Instructions:

This is an ALPHA I position, requiring the incumbent to report during inclement weather and other modified or emergency conditions.
The incumbent is required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and Virginia State Inspectors License within the first year of employment (the probationary period).
The incumbent is required to obtain a valid 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification within the first year of employment (the probationary period).
The incumbent must possess all tools necessary to complete required tasks.
Please state on your application any experience or specialty knowledge of heavy-duty equipment and vehicles such as Heil, New Way, LaBrie, Pac Mac, and Palfinger. Also include any experience with Mack, Freightliner, Peterbilt, Hino, Cummings Engines and Alison Transmissions.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
