The City of Virginia Beach’s Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in field of study.

Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.

Applications received will be considered for Spring and Summer internship opportunities that become available. We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists. 

We are currently hiring interns for the following internship opportunities: Energy Communications, Health & Wellness, Biology, and Engineering.  Additional details are outlined below.

Energy Communications Internship Opportunity:

The City of Virginia Beach’s Department of Public Works, Facility Management Division, is seeking a talented student who demonstrates excellent problem-solving, analytical, written, and oral communication, and interpersonal skills for a part-time internship to assist with communication of energy conservation and other City initiatives.

Required Education: Major or minor (or declaration thereof) in marketing, communications, sustainability, earth sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field. Preferably in their Junior or Senior year of studies.

  • Developing content for presentations, training, website pages, press releases, and other written material.
  • Researching and analyzing comparable energy programs.
  • Attending energy-related meetings and taking notes to aid in communication planning.

Health and Wellness Internship Opportunity:

The City of Virginia Beach Fire Department is offering an exciting opportunity as a Health and Wellness Intern. 

Required Education: Student working towards BS or higher degree in a Health Science related field. Applicants should be going into senior year of program. Any fitness certification is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Assist with enhancing wellness initiatives, new hire fitness evaluations, and recruit
    physical training sessions for police and fire
  • Fire station and police precinct wellness visits
  • Leading morning or evening workout sessions for incumbent first responders

Biology Laboratory Internship Opportunity:

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works department is looking for Biology Laboratory Interns for the summer of 2024. Summer Workers will work directly with the mosquito control biologist and her assistant to survey adult mosquito populations and perform mosquito-borne disease surveillance. Approximately May 2, 2024 – Oct. 10, 2024.

Required Education: Active student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Entomology, Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Health, or similar discipline.

  • Set-up, collections, and maintenance of various types of mosquito traps.
  • Mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation.
  • Collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae.

  • Care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks.
  • Other related tasks
