OPEN UNTIL FILLED: This position will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. First review of applications will be held on June 29, 2021.    Applications submitted on/after that date will only be considered if the candidate pool needs to be expanded or additional vacancies become available.  Once the appropriate applicant pool has been established, it will be closed.

Work Hours: Mon - Thurs; 6:30 am to 5:00 pm OR Tue.-Fri; 6:30 am to 5:00 pm

  • Operate a Vacuum Truck and utilize associated equipment to clean and remove debris from stormwater drainage pipes.
  • Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
  • Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from job site.
  • Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal, or sanding of icy streets and roads.
  • Operate dump truck and/or backhoe in making ditch repairs.
  • Assist with pump stations maintenance, pond aerator maintenance, sluice gate maintenance, and street sweeper/vacuum truck maintenance. 
  • Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment include, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe, vacuum truck.
  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
  • Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, downing trees, and shoveling sediment.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
  • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC)

This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

Pre-employment physical is required.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires completion of the tenth (10th) grade, plus three (3) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
This position requires a valid Class B Commercial Drivers license.

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.
This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Attachments Required: 


• Possess a High School diploma or GED.
• Possess a class A CDL.
• Possession of a Tank Vehicle Endorsement or must be able to obtain within six months of employment
• Drainage or utility maintenance experience.
• Experience in operating heavy equipment such as excavator, front end loader, backhoe, Vacuum Truck, etc.
• Experience in the daily maintenance requirements of heavy equipment.
• Familiarity with Miss Utility procedures.
• Possess a valid Escort Vehicle Driver Certification.
• Computer experience.
• Experience in the excavation and cleaning of ditches.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
