Job Duties:

Librarian I - Digital Services Librarian I / II

Job Duties Librarian I / ll - Digital Services Librarian:

  • Co-Leads the Digital Services Team, which is comprised of representative branch and support staff, to direct and implement the design and usability of the library’s website
  • Collaborates to sustain the library’s internal and external web presence related to usability and accessibility.
  • Develops and supports the integration of digital applications and services and electronic resources.
  • Collaborates in management of the design, development and maintenance of the library’s websites.
  • Facilitate and interpret analysis using statistics and web analytics for the library’s digital services to ensure that applications are functional, content is accurate and timely, and links are valid.
  • Ensure the Library’s digital resources are in alignment with the library’s brand and strategic vision.
  • Establish and manage a web presence governance model.
  • Serve as a content collaborator for the library’s digital presence with Library Community Relations and Development staff and the Content Advisory Board to ensure accurate and timely information.
  • Evaluate and recommend based on defined criteria, new technologies and digital resources to improve discovery, access, and delivery of library services.
  • Work with vendors that provide products and services to evaluate, develop and maintain connectivity and electronic resources for the library.
  • Provide technology and training support for library digital services.
  • Assist in the development of research resources through the digitization of primary source materials.
  • Participate, upon request, in library strategic planning.
  • Manages projects, including timelines, development of costs, and progress.
  • Participate on Library and citywide teams to ensure library initiatives and priorities are represented in City decisions.
  • Participates in and supports activities of all assigned teams in an informed, constructive, and organized manner to ensure accurate communication on the status of the library’s digital initiatives. 
  • Participate in planning and implementation of grants related to library technology
  • Remain current on topics affecting the library profession through reading professional journals and digital lists, participation in professional organizations or continuing education activities to anticipate and meet customer needs
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Special Instructions:

The position may be filled as either a Librarian I or Librarian II (Digital Services Librarian) depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant.  The associated pay grades and ranges are as follows:

Librarian I:   A.7, $46,134.40 - $69,929.60

Librarian II: A.9, $50,918.40 - $77,188.80

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Librarian I Digital Services:
Requires a Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Librarian II Digital Services:
Requires a Master’s degree in Library Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program, plus two (2) years of professional/administrative library work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.

Preferences:

Experience in working with vendors that provide key products and services to evaluate, develop and maintain connectivity and electronic resources for the
library
Experience in producing accurate and timely products based on best practices in the profession
Experience with web standards and best practices including usability and ADA accessibility requirements
Experience with researching and recommending library related vendor supplied products and services
Experience in designing, creating, and managing content for the library's digital services
Experience with developing and maintaining documentation for digital initiatives
Experience in developing documentation and training for use of library digital resources.

Special Instructions:

Must obtain Virginia State Professional Library Certification within one year of employment.

Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays. May be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-Wide emergencies.

LIBRARIAN l – DIGITAL SERVICES - Requires a Master’s degree in library Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LIBRARIAN II – DIGITAL SERVICES - Requires a Master’s degree in library Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program, plus two (2) years of professional/administrative library work.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
