The Converged Architecture Systems Engineer II will join a team of technology engineers who all work to integrate best practices and innovative solutions within data center infrastructure and cloud computing. The Converged Architecture team is responsible for projects, operational support, troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, and expansion of the City’s foundational computer and public cloud infrastructure.  Project responsibilities include coordination, detailed implementation/migration planning, meeting timelines, and coordinating vendor installations. This position reports to a technical manager and will work closely with both the Converged Architecture team and other teams within the IT department.

The ideal candidate will be self-driven, collaborative, eager to enact change, and will be required to learn and stay well-informed of new technologies and identify opportunities and best practices for the organization.

Candidate should have experience in the following City supported services, to include:

  • Converged or Hyper Converged Architecture
  • Server Virtualization Platforms
  • Identity and Access Management
  • Data Center Network Virtualization
  • Enterprise Level Data Protection Technologies
  • Automation and Orchestration Platforms and Techniques
  • Configuration Management
  • Desktop and Application Virtualization
  • Load Balancing Concepts and Application Delivery Controllers
  • Private/ Public Cloud IaaS and PaaS

In addition, the ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working with a team of highly skilled technology engineers
  • Microsoft Windows Server engineering/administration experience
  • VMware Engineering, Architecture, and Design experience
  • Experience with Designing and Implementing Public Cloud Solutions
  • Experience with Automating On-Premises and Public Cloud Infrastructure
  • Incident, Problem, and Change Management experience
  • One or more of the following certifications: VCP, MCSE, Azure SAE, AWS CSA

CJIS/PREA Disclaimer:  ***This position will provide direct support to the City’s Public Safety departments and will have physical access to public safety buildings and/or access to confidential and sensitive public safety databases.  As such, and in compliance with federal regulations and guidelines, City of Virginia Beach IT staff and contractors must receive a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) and may require a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) criminal background clearance prior to employment and annually thereafter while employed or under contract with the City of Virginia Beach.  Automatic disqualifiers related to the CJIS and PREA criminal background checks apply, including but not limited to, US Citizenship and/or minimum ten (10) years US Residency requirements.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM: Any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to eight (8) years in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and associated with such positions as information technology systems engineer, database administrator, technical systems analyst, programmer analyst or systems analyst. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Four (4) years of progressive professional experience in the advertised job role may be required; such required certifications will be listed in the requisition that announces the vacancy. Position may require one or more Expert Level Industry Certifications specific to the work to be performed and maintain currency of those, or successor, certifications; such required certifications will be listed in the requisition that announces the vacancy.

• Experience with Multi-Data Center Enterprise Environments
• Methodical troubleshooting and analytical skills
• Ability to identify key performance indicators, trending metrics, capacity planning, building reporting dashboards
• Experience with Microsoft and/or Cisco Messaging and Collaboration
• Experience with Storage Area Networks (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS).
• Proven communication & organizational skills - must have ability to communicate at all levels within the organization both verbally and in writing
• B.S. in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Engineering, or similar degree
• One or more of the following certifications: VCP, MCSE, Azure SAE, AWS CSA

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
