Job Description

The position of Senior U.S. Energy Systems Modeler will have a key role in developing, modifying, and applying a variety of energy systems models and data analysis tools to examine energy trends, impacts of proposed government policies, and the associated financial and economic impacts of energy investment decisions. Developing insights from the analysis and communicating results to clients, the research community, and public is also critical to the success of the position. Career path is to a director-level position with added responsibilities and visibility.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as internal subject expert and OnLocation leader on all aspects of developing and running the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS).
  • Apply economic principles, methods, and practices to develop and employ "state of the art" energy-economic models, with focus on the electricity sector, for assessing the impacts of energy, climate, and environmental measures on the energy sector in particular.
  • Provide expert analysis on policy, technological, economic, and other issues related to reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution emissions as well as advancing energy-related technologies.
  • Align OnLocation's analyses with similar activities undertaken by various offices and laboratories within the Federal agencies of the U.S. Government, state agencies, universities, and other energy research and non-governmental organizations.
  • Provide industry expertise in the electricity sector and potentially other areas of the energy system.
  • Support the Director, Energy Economics, as requested, including areas of business development, research, client relations and report writing.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff modeling and analyses efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • 8-12 years of technical work experience or comparable educational experience in operations research, economic modeling, or energy and environmental policy analysis; or equivalent.
  • Advanced degree in Economics, Operations Research, or a related discipline, with significant hands-on experience with environmental & energy economics, mathematical programming and public policy. 
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff, contracted resources, and the scientific and technical community at large to collect and assess information on new, innovative technical opportunities.
  • Excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate research issues, approaches, and findings with non-specialists as well as with government officials, scientists, and industry executives.
  • Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer.
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently

  Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with at least one high-level modeling systems for mathematical programming, optimization, and economics, such as AIMMS, GAMS, AMPL, Matlab, or similar.
  • Experience with EIA’s NEMS Framework and related data bases
  • Strong Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills, with other tools such as R/ Python a plus
  • Familiarity with Federal, and State energy and climate policy initiatives and experience analyzing energy sector issues.
  • Strong understanding of at least one of mathematical economics, econometrics, or statistics
  • Experience with eViews and macro econometric modeling
  • Demonstrated record of publishing high quality research.
  • Technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert.
