The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents.  Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services.  We are currently hiring for a Maintenance Engineer II, Senior Electrician with our Electrical Support Team.

Special Requirements for Public Utilities, Operations & Maintenance:  Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs as we are a 24/7/365 department. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. 

Special Requirement for Position:  This position requires the candidate possess a Masters Electrician License from the state of Virginia or a state that is recognized by Virginia for license reciprocity at time of application. Virginia accepts licensure from Alabama, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia & North Carolina. To apply for reciprocity, the license holder must submit a completed application to VA-DOR along with verification of licensure from the out-of-state board. Candidates not holding a Masters Electrician License issued by an eligible state will not be considered for interview.


 Duties of Maintenance Engineer II, Senior Electrician include but are not limited to:

  • Direct and complete work orders for proper electrical maintenance and calibration of instrumentation in sanitary sewer and water pumping stations
  • Perform troubleshooting, repairs, alterations and installations to the electrical and electronic systems in sanitary sewer and water pumping stations throughout the City of Virginia Beach in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations
  • Assist in the review of electrical plans/blueprints and specifications for new and alteration of city buildings; prepare and submit electrical specifications for electrical work
  • Direct and complete work orders for new construction and station rehabs in the electrical bureau
  • Diagnose electrical problems and ensure the proper method, tools, equipment, and materials are available to complete the repairs
  • Complete work orders and repair parts in a timely manner
  • Make program changes to PLC programs
  • Troubleshoot radio and cellular communication issues
  • Will complete purchasing requests
  • Will act as an Inspector’s consultant for pump station projects
  • Ensure crew follows all NEC and OSHA standards to ensure a safe working environment and quality workmanship
  • Complete required paperwork and records to prepare detail reports
  • Provide input on crew member employee performance feedback reports
  • Provide field training to crew members
  • Communicates clearly with the Maintenance Engineer Building Systems/Assistant Superintendent about any issues that arise
  • May temporarily perform supervisory functions in absence of the supervisor
  • Possess/Maintain a Virginia Master Electrician license (non-negotiable)
  • Works in all types of weather conditions and must work nights, weekends, holidays, standby and emergencies as needed
  • Other tasks/duties as assigned by bureau superintendents

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years (three (3) of which should have been in a supervisory position) in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as electrical engineering. Master Electrician's license required. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical. Commercial driver's license may be required.

Preferences:

Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application:

Experience and demonstrated working knowledge of commercial/industrial electrical and/or motor control, process control, instrumentation. PLCs, and communication equipment.
Experience working with water and/or sewer pumping facilities and associated equipment.
Knowledge of electrical theory and design.
Experience working with schematics/blueprints.
Knowledge of National Electrical Codes.
Possession/maintenance of a Virginia Master Electrician License is a requirement of the position (non-negotiable).
Supervisory experience
Experience with electrical theory and its application

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
