Job Duties:
The Virginia Beach City Attorney's Office provides effective and efficient legal services, promotes accountability, trust and openness in government, and focuses on outcomes that are fair, equitable and balanced while protecting the best interests of the client.
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated civil litigation attorney to handle high-profile federal and state court litigation. The successful candidate must have 5 years civil litigation experience representing clients in both state and federal courts and must be admitted to practice in Virginia, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Typical cases involve police activities, civil rights matters, personal injury claims, and employment litigation, and will also include administrative proceedings and preparation of legal opinions. First chair jury trial and federal court litigation experience strongly preferred.
This position will be filled as an Associate City Attorney, with compensation depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. The associated pay grade and range is as follows:
Associate City Attorney: A21, $94,648.30 - $146,704.87
Residency in the City of Virginia Beach is not required.

MINIMUMS:
Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Federal District Court is required for this position. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Special Instructions:
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
