The City of Virginia Beach’s Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in field of study.

Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.

Applications received will be considered for Spring and Summer internship opportunities that become available. We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists.

Mosquito Control Biologist Aid / Assistant Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Mosquito Control is in search of three Mosquito Control Biology Aid Interns for the Summer of 2025. Summer Workers will work directly with the mosquito control biologist and her assistant to survey adult mosquito populations and perform mosquito-borne disease surveillance.

Required Education: Degree seeking student majoring in Entomology, Biology, Animal Science,  Environmental Health, Environmental Science or related field.

Required Attachments: Resume, Cover Letter, and Transcripts (unofficial will be accepted). 

Duties: 

  • Set-up, collections, and maintenance of various types of mosquito traps
  • Mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation
  • Collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae
  • Collection of blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks
  • Care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks and other related tasks.

Application Deadline: Friday, March 14, 2025. Interviews will be scheduled for qualified applicants in early April 2025. 

Expected Duration & Schedule: Approximately May 1, 2025 – Oct. 9, 2025. We will try to accommodate fall 2025 academic schedules but ask that our interns commit for the entire mosquito season (through Oct. 9, 2025). Weekly hours average 20 – 25 per week Monday through Thursday with daily schedules varying.

VBFD Media and Graphics Design Internship: 

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is looking for a Media and Graphics Design Intern.

Required Education: Degree seeking student majoring in Communications, Marketing, Graphics Design, Business Administration, or related field.

Application Deadline: Open until filled with applications reviewed on a weekly basis starting September 20th 2024.

Public Utilities Engineering Design & Construction Management Services / QAQC Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Public Utilities Internship Program is designed to recruit diverse college students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. The program provides viable full-time work experiences during the summer that assist students in making connections between textbook knowledge and real-world experiences. 

Required Education: Degree seeking student currently enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program.

Application Deadline: Open until filled. 

Expected Schedule & HoursCandidates will work a 40-hour internship between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for approximately 12 weeks (May 12, 2025 – August 8, 2025). Flexibility for school schedules is allowable. Normal work hours may vary depending on the position. The applicant is responsible to provide their own transportation to work and housing during the internship.

Duties may include: 

  • The preparation of water and/or sanitary sewer rehabilitation plans and construction documents.
  • Reviewing plans, sanitary sewer defects videos, contracts, and permits.
  • Researching files, records, plans, deeds, plats, and easements.
  • Performing basic calculations and computations for water and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Performing field work for projects including taking photos, recording measurements, etc.
