Job Duties:

The Virginia Beach City Attorney's Office provides effective and efficient legal services, promotes accountability, trust and openness in government and focuses on outcomes that are fair, equitable and balanced while protecting the best interests of the City.

We are seeking an individual with an interest in, and knowledge of Land Use, Zoning and Environmental Law.

This position requires solid problem-solving and communication skills. The primary functions of the position include: acting as general counsel to boards and commissions, preparing written opinions based on legal research, representing the City in court on civil and criminal enforcement actions and administrative proceedings, reviewing contracts and storm water agreements, and drafting ordinances and resolutions.  Excellent writing ability, sharp analytical skills, and strong research abilities are essential in this fast-paced office.  Experience in environmental regulatory, enforcement and transactional matters preferred.

Residency in the City of Virginia Beach is not required.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM:
Active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required for this position. However, contingent offers may be made to those who are registered to take the next scheduled Virginia Bar Exam (February or July) and pass the Exam, or those who intend to waive in for licensure in Virginia.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours more than their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

The hiring range for this position is $77,876.40  - $95,000 DOE.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
