The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire a Behavior Specialist I who has experience with Electronic Health Records and working with adults diagnosed with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) in a day support program for the SkillQuest program in our Developmental Services Division.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide group day services to adults with developmental/intellectual disabilities, using methods which encourage independence with mobility, health care, personal care, leisure, life skills, socialization, community integration, and behavior.
  • Ensures BH/DS assistants implement Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) and Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) as written to assist individuals with reaching personal goals.
  • Develop Individualized Support Plans (ISPs) and Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) for assigned individuals to include completion of assessments, participation in planning meetings, and coordination of services with the rest of the team.
  • Completes quarterly reviews for assigned individuals according to current practices. Revises plans as needed based on reviews of supports provided.
  • Provides ongoing input to responsible staff regarding changes needed to ISP/IPP and additional information to add to assessments and/or include in the record.
  • Uses appropriate problem-solving strategies independently or with others to make proper decisions and reports issues that cannot be resolved to immediate supervisor.
  • Facilitates the development of a monthly activity calendar for the group focused on person-centered activities.
  • Drives City vehicles, including wheelchair vans, when appropriately trained to do so.

**Hiring bonuses shall only be for new hires of original employment or reemployment as defined in Human Resources Policy No. 5.0.

  • $500 will be awarded in the first paycheck.
  • $1,000 will be awarded upon completing the six (6) month interim performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.  
  • $1,500 will be awarded upon completing the employee’s one (1) year probationary period and a performance evaluation with an overall rating of “Meets Expectations”.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities such as, sociology, psychology, or special education. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Experience working with individuals with IDD.
Experience working in a day support setting.
Experience with implementing Person-Centered/Individualized Service Plans.
Experience with programs implementing Medicaid Waiver, Human Rights, and licensure regulations.
Experience providing direct care, including ADL’s.
Experience with Electronic Health Records.
Experience working with challenging behaviors.
Experience with creating and implementing group activities.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
