The Role   
Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking a creative and skillful Exhibit Technician. The primary focus of this position is on the daily care and upkeep of all exhibitions featured at LSC. This role will also include fabrication, installation, and maintenance of in-house, traveling and off-site exhibitions. Ideal candidates will be required to diagnose, troubleshoot and research successful solutions for exhibit carpentry, electrical, mechanical and computer issues. 

The Exhibit Technician reports to the Senior Manager of Exhibit Services.

What You’ll Do
Exhibit Technician will:

  1. Responsible for the daily operations of all Liberty Science Center’s exhibits, including daily start-up and shut-down, and ensuring all exhibits are operationally functional during all times the building is open to the public, including evening and private events
  2. Responds to daily calls from the front-line exhibit floor staff and volunteers regarding assistance with exhibit operation and maintenance issues
  3. Troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems down to the component level to determine root cause of issue and recommend corrective action
  4. Operates oscilloscopes, generators, meters, hand & power tools; service & test computers, and understands their use and function
  5. Develops, tests, implements, evaluates and tracks preventative maintenance programs for exhibits
  6. Provides support for in-house fabrication and outside firms in the installation/dismantle of Liberty Science Center exhibits
  7. Maintain record keeping of exhibit files, histories and inventory
  8. Establish preventive maintenance schedule, that includes cleanliness of electronic components environment
  9. Utilize mechanical drawings, schematics, and product manuals towards repair and maintenance of exhibit components
  10. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. 
  11. Observe safety and risk management procedures in public areas and work spaces
  12. Other responsibilities, as needed

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Knowledgeable in the use of basic carpentry techniques, hand tools, power tools, basic electrical wiring and lighting, paints and adhesives, and associated safety practices
  2. Ability to read and understand schematics and product & maintenance manuals
  3. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills on electrical, mechanical, and computer components
  4. Experience with model railroads is a plus
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  6. Ability to juggle multiple projects while ensuring quality of work
  7. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, able to analyze situations, and respond quickly to deliver effective solutions
  8. Strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  1. College degree or equivalent education (technical or trade school) required
  2. Requires at least 2 years in computer diagnostics, mechanics, fabrication work, carpentry, metal work, lighting, and/or electrical work
  3. Knowledge and experience with shop equipment
  4. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret design circuit diagrams, schematics, shop/fabrication drawings, and standard business documents
  5. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural guides
  6. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from co-workers and the public

Classification, Location, and Schedule
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, non-exempt position. The ideal candidate must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and early mornings, as business needs or special events may require. Given that LSC is a seven-day-a-week operation, all employees must be able to work a flexible schedule as the business requires.

Compensation & Benefits
The compensation range for this role is $44,000-$50,000. The final offer is commensurate with the candidate’s skills, education, certifications, and experience. In addition to compensation for salary, you will receive compensation in the form of generous benefits, including, but not limited to:

​​​​Physical Demands
The Exhibit Technician is required to be on their feet a majority of the day and use their hands to manipulate tools and materials. The Exhibit Technician will need to perform diagnostics via visual and audio cues. The Exhibit Technician should be comfortable working at various heights, including working on ladders and lifts. Furthermore, the Exhibit Technician should be comfortable maneuvering through large crowds, as well as being in tight spaces and working in potentially dusty conditions. The ability to lift 40 lbs. will be necessary. Training will be provided to the Exhibit Technician for the safe operation of the following lifts: scissor, toucan, and forklift.
