The Role   
Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking an experienced AV Technician to join the Technology Services team on a casual basis, meaning on an as-needed basis. The AV Technician provides audiovisual support for events ranging from corporate meetings to galas to celebratory parties, such as bar mitzvahs, birthdays, weddings, and award ceremonies. The candidate for this position will need to be proficient in supporting sound reinforcement and video systems as well as troubleshooting and correcting any issues/glitches that may arise during an event.

The AV Technician will report to the co-heads of the Technology Services team.

What You’ll Do

1. Integrate AV equipment with IT systems (network infrastructure, control systems, and video conferencing platforms) to optimize event experiences
2. Install, configure, and provide training sessions on software applications and hardware functionalities to ensure event operators and other users are equipped with the knowledge to effectively setup and use the technology
3. Set up and operate small to medium sized sound and video equipment (mics, speakers, audio mixing consoles, projectors, TVs, video switchers, playback media, computers)
4. Provide support and troubleshoot permanently installed audiovisual systems in event spaces and theaters
5. Support live science demonstrations with audio and visual components.
6. Respond to calls on technology operation and maintenance issues
7. Responsible for start up and shut down of AV equipment on operational days and special events
8. Troubleshooting the technical issues in the planetarium and 3D movie theater
9. Other responsibilities, as needed

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

1. Understanding of signal flow, analog and digital soundboards, video switchers, projectors, and PowerPoint
2. Knowledge of video conferencing platforms like Zoom and Google Meet
3. Up-to-date knowledge of best practices in AV and IT
4. Exceptional communication skills
5. Creative and resourceful problem solving skills
6. Ability to work both independently and as a team player

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

1. 2+ years of  providing audio visual support and/or staging for a large organization or production company
2. Experience working with AV equipment and provided AV-related maintenance, including use of maintenance tools (basic hand and power tools)
3. On-the-job experience in stage lighting is a plus

Classification and Schedule
The AV Technician is a casual position which is non-exempt, meaning this role is eligible for overtime for work that exceeds 40 hours per work week. The AV Technician is scheduled to meet the needs of LSC’s business onsite at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. This is a casual position, meaning there is no guaranteed weekly schedule.  It is possible that an AV tech  could be scheduled 0 - 24 hours per week based on business needs and your availability.  During LSC’s busy event season it is expected that there will be regular opportunities to work. Shifts may range from 4 to 8 hours. This role must have a base availability that is documented at the time of job offer. The supervisors will do their best to schedule three weeks in advance so you can make life plans.

Compensation & Benefits
The Technology Service Technician is compensated at a rate of $21.50 per hour. Liberty Science Center also provides perks for all eligible part-time employees, including:

NOTE: Candidates for this position must be able to perform the essential functions of this role with or without reasonable accommodations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, be comfortable with heights (employee will occasionally need to work on ladders and scaffolding), be able crawl on hands and knees to run and tape down cables, and be able to stand for long periods of time.  The Technology Service Technician also must be comfortable to work in low lighting and be able to work events that have strobe lighting.
