This position will be based in Patna and will contribute to our Environmental Health program focusing on two projects in Bihar that aim to provide technical assistance around lead poisoning prevention and air pollution. The selected candidate will report to the team leads for respective projects and will provide in-country epidemiologic and programmatic support, including assessing and analysing routinely collected exposure and health outcomes data needed to inform health impact assessments. S/he will collaborate with a team of environmental health scientists, epidemiologists, public health practitioners, and statisticians across Vital Strategies and work with a wide range of partner organizations including high-level and middle-level civil servants in India. Applicants must have a strong professional proficiency in both written and spoken English and Hindi.

The salary for this position is INR 21,00,000 to INR 24,00,000. Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance and programmatic support to lead poisoning prevention project, including launching a biomonitoring surveillance program to evaluate children’s exposures to lead, overseeing data collection, and reporting on findings
  • Provide technical assistance and programmatic support to local staff working on an air pollution program in India aimed at engaging the health sector in addressing leading sources of pollutants
  • Develop and sustain partnerships with government and non-government organizations in various sectors including health, environment, and education
  • Support project start-up, recruitment, contracting, and procurement activities
  • Coordinate and monitor implementation of key project activities
  • Act as a Vital Strategies focal point and representative for key partner organizations in Bihar
  • Assist with other duties as specified by supervisor

 

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in Science with 10 years of relevant work experience or Master’s degree in public health, environmental science, epidemiology or related field with 8 years of relevant experience

Desired Experience

  • Prior work experience with international non-governmental organizations
  • Prior work experience with environmental epidemiology, especially related to lead poisoning prevention or air pollution
  • Experience liaising with government stakeholders
  • Experience conducting public health surveillance
  • Strong foundational understanding of epidemiologic analysis and terminology
  • Experience managing complex data flows

Skills & abilities

  • Professional oral and written proficiency in English and Hindi
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines with limited supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Proficient in SAS, STATA, SPSS or other statistical software

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work flexibly with colleagues across time zones
  • Willing to travel to the state semi-regularly for up to two weeks at a time
