Vital Strategies, headquartered in New York City, is global public health organization that strengthens public health systems and addresses the world’s leading causes of illness, injury and death. Resolve to Save Lives is a global health initiative of Vital Strategies that since 2017 has been working closely with governments, international organizations, community organizations, academic and other partners in more than 40 countries to save millions of lives by reducing preventable deaths from cardiovascular disease and strengthening capacity to prevent, detect and respond to epidemic threats. Interns at Resolve to Save Lives will have the chance to develop skills and contribute to our initiatives through engaging, meaningful work assignments that can help jump start their career in public health.

Overall Role 

The Office of the President directly supports Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), former Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and former Commissioner of the New York City Health Department. The intern will report to Robynn Cheng Leidig, Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives, and assignments will be mutually agreed upon.

Potential projects and responsibilities may include:

  1. US public health policy. Research and develop policy ideas to strengthen the US public health system, with a focus on addressing health disparities.
  2. Professional development: Help to organize professional development opportunities for staff, including a Resolve-wide “Team Talk” with an outside expert.
  3. Business development/ fundraising: Assist in Resolve’s fundraising efforts, including tracking potential donors and developing prep materials in advance of donor meetings. 
  4. Communications: contribute to a communications product (e.g. Oped, publication, presentation, guidelines, factsheets, etc.) through background research, writing, and editing.


  • Graduate student 
  • Area of study: Public Health, Public Administration, or Public Policy
  • Required skills: organized, responsive, attentive to details, excellent communication skills
  • Preferred skills: interest in public health and/or public policy, with a focus on the US

Internship Details:

  • Up to 25 hours a week, paid
  • September to December 2021 
  • Internships are remote, but interns may have the opportunity to visit the NYC offices when they re-open, depending on the COVID pandemic.
