We are currently recruiting a Global Humanitarian Director to join our Programs team. 

This is a remote, 18 weeks fixed term position, open to candidates based in RI countries of operation

About the Opportunity.

The Global Humanitarian Director plays a crucial role in Relief International’s response to humanitarian emergencies. Responsible for keeping RI’s standards for humanitarian response up to date – these standards, associated tools, and trainings are used to carry out high quality humanitarian responses in both emergency and protracted crisis settings.

 

Your responsibilities will be

 

  • Humanitarian Standards and Best Practices: Build agency capacity in line with industry humanitarian standards and best practices.  
  • Emergency preparedness and capacity building: Support regional and country teams in the development of emergency preparedness plans adhering to humanitarian standards and best practices.  
  • Humanitarian Representation: Internally and externally, represent RI’s humanitarian positioning and efforts. 
  • Emergency Response: Lead the coordination of RI responses to large-scale emergencies. 
  • Security and Humanitarian Access: Provide oversight and support to the Global Security and Access Director in the development of Relief International’s security strategy.
  • Advocacy & Fundraising: Support Program Development, Communications and Philanthropy departments to expand RI's donor base through advocacy with existing donors and by seeking new non-traditional partners. 
  • Culture of safety and security: Work with the Global Security and Access Director to embed risk management and security planning as a key element of all the work we do across the organization.

 
 
About You.

You will bring the following experience and skills.

  • Proven experience in emergency preparedness planning. Excellent organizational, coordination and training skills.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of funding agencies and international organizations (including ECHO, FCDO and BHA/USAID) for humanitarian and development/reconstruction programs. 
  • Sound knowledge of international humanitarian standards, systems and context.
  • Experience of managing operations in high risks contexts and managing security and access risks and incidents. Sound experience and skills in financial planning, budgeting and management.
  • Ability to skilfully influence and advocate internally and externally in service of RI’s mission. Proven track record of moving strategic priorities forward, through a collaborative and iterative process.
  • Extensive management experience in international organizations, both in humanitarian response and long-term development in emergency or fragile contexts. Proven ability managing large, diverse, multi-country and multi-sectoral teams in high-stress environments, in a start-up phase.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to work with, all departments of an INGO, including finance, business development, communications, operations, risk, and compliance; 
  • Experience in fragile settings that have conflict, post-conflict, or transitional state environments essential. 
  • Ability to travel up to 40% in international settings, often with short notice and in hostile or insecure environments. 
  • Strong spoken and written English language skills essential.
  • Additional languages desirable e.g. Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, Dari etc.
