Mi’kmaq Bursaries

At Nova Scotia Power, we see the diversity of our team as one of our strengths – and something we continue to focus on and celebrate. Our five-year community investment strategy focuses on supporting programs, organizations and initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, and diversity, helping to remove barriers and advance education and driving awareness in our communities.

These four $1000 non-renewable awards are available to Mi’kmaw students. These awards are available to Mi’kmaw students entering any year of a full time post-secondary education program. The recipients will also have the opportunity to receive a 12-week paid internship at Nova Scotia Power. Recipients will be notified to apply for opportunities.

Past recipients that have received an award in the program are eligible to re-apply each year for up to four years while still enrolled in an accredited program.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a registered Mi’kmaw person with one of the thirteen Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia.
  • Applicants must be a permanent resident of Nova Scotia.

Recipients are selected based on demonstration of leadership, involvement with the Mi’kmaw community(s), participation in extra-curricular activities, and the written essay. Academic standing will be considered as part of the selection process.

This scholarship will not be awarded in conjunction with any other Nova Scotia Power scholarship and not eligible to Mi’kmaw students in pursuit of Graduate studies.

Application Requirements

To qualify please complete the Nova Scotia Power Mi’kmaq Bursary Program online application and include the following documents under "Attachments":

  1. Resume
  2. High School transcript (Grade 10-12, including fall semester marks) or University transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  3. Essay; max 500 words. TOPIC: “Talk to us about your accomplishments, goals and involvement in your community. Describe a time in your life and/or a way in which you contributed to your community that has shaped who you are as a person.” (This is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the Selection Committee. Write a brief essay that will help us get to know the person behind the application form)
  4. Budget (click on this template link  to open the document)

Selection Process

A Selection Committee, of Nova Scotia Power Employees and Mi’kmaw representative(s), will review the applications and make their decisions based on the following criteria: financial need, demonstration of leadership and involvement with the Mi’kmaw community, participation in extra-curricular activities and the written essay portion of the application form. Academic standing will be considered as part of the selection process. Selected applicants may be invited for an interview.

  • If you already have a profile with us, click on “Login Page” at the top right to log in

Step 1: Your Information

  1. Upload only your Resume using the “Upload Resume” button
  2. Complete the necessary fields
  3. Click the next arrow

Step 2: Resume and Questions 

  1. Attach your remaining documents using the “Add Attachment” button under the heading “Attachments”
  2. These documents include: Your essay, transcript, and budget template
  3. Click the next arrow

Step 3: Review and Submit

  1. eSign and select the date
  2. Click on “Application Review” to ensure all documents have been uploaded correctly
  3. Click “Submit”

Note:   You must complete the entire application before clicking submit, you cannot log in later to add documents. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
