Make a difference for national security by joining a team of dedicated professionals in El Segundo, CA and Colorado Springs, CO who assist the U.S. Air Force and Space Force in developing and deploying the next generation of satellites and ground systems for missile warning (MW) and space-based environmental monitoring (SBEM). These systems alert senior military officials when missile launches occur around the globe, as well as enable global naval vessel and troop movements by providing mission-critical weather data to ensure safe passage.

The KBR Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) team has a need for a Systems Engineer to act as our Environmental Monitoring Science and Technology Lead with experience in Department of Defense (DoD), NOAA/NASA, and Commercial Weather Space-Based and Weather Ground systems. Candidate will provide SE&I support to the Environmental Monitoring (EM) Capability Area. This opportunity can be in Los Angeles, CA or Colorado Springs, CO.


  • Responsible for Science and Technology Planning for terrestrial weather and space environment mission areas.
  • Coordinates and consults with a broad community of researchers at national labs, industry, and academia for applicable technologies and manages and maintains roadmaps for sensors, models, applications, and decision aids. 
  • Manages personnel executing technology applications verifying and validating their compliance with user-defined thresholds, standing up of virtual community effects demonstration and display platform to reach users for evaluation globally. 
  • Coordinate’s forums and working groups for defining requirements, entry and exist criteria, and execution and evaluation of technology. 
  • Collaborates with prime contractors, other team contractors, government civilians, and members of the U.S. Air Force. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with space and ground systems, broad application of the systems engineering disciplines, and the systems engineering lifecycle.  
  • Master’s degree in meteorology and space physics with practical applications.
  • 10+ Years of demonstrated experience in technology development and experience with space, ground, operations and sustainment segments of DoD, NOAA/NASA, and Commercial Weather Space-Based and Weather Ground systems
  • Prior experience with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), DoD and Commercial Weather satellite programs to include:
    • Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP),
    • National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS)
    • Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R).
  • Prior experience with remote sensing missions and technology.

  • Candidate should have experience with space and terrestrial Weather systems, ground and space system acquisition, and system engineering experience.
  • Experience leading systems engineering activities in the development, transition to operations, operations, and sustainment of complex satellite systems.
  • Experience writing and delivering technical documents and briefings.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Air Force/DoD customers in an acquisition environment.

Security Qualifications: Must have an active secret clearance with the ability to upgrade


Basic Compensation:

$130,000 - $160,000 - Colorado Springs

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
