Position Summary:

Campbell University Divinity School invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track faculty as assistant or associate professor of Old Testament beginning August 2025. The appointee will teach introductory and advanced courses in Old Testament literature and interpretation and biblical Hebrew. Facility with a diverse range of methodological approaches, including contextualized readings such as womanist, feminist, and disabilities studies, is desired.

The teaching load is nine hours per semester and may include classroom-based, intensive, online, or hybrid modalities. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to support the larger curriculum of the Divinity School, e.g., by teaching additional courses in a secondary subject or providing direction for a component of the curriculum such as the Doctor of Ministry program. Assigned teaching may be in any of the Divinity School’s four-degree programs: Master of Arts in Faith & Leadership Formation, Master of Arts in Christian Ministry, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry. The salary and rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Contract year is nine months. Additional teaching opportunities are possible in the summer for additional compensation.

The appointee must be supportive of the Christian purpose of Campbell University and the mission of the Divinity School to provide Christ-centered, Bible-based, ministry-focused theological education. The appointee must be able to relate to the diverse cultural backgrounds and denominational traditions represented within the Divinity School student body and its constituents. Commitment to the service of the church and willingness to represent the Divinity School through speaking and teaching engagements in local congregations and other settings is expected. Commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, and staff is expected. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement curriculum in Old Testament literature and interpretation and in biblical Hebrew, teaching nine hours per semester as assigned; assess participation and performance of students within the classroom; administer exams according to university guidelines; complete student record keeping in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Advise and mentor students; interact with students in a positive manner, listen effectively, field questions pertaining to subject matter.
  • Assist in recruitment efforts.
  • Participate in Divinity School and University committees as assigned; maintain timely communication with administration, staff, and other faculty; participate in faculty and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Provide service to Divinity School and University constituencies, particularly congregations and denominations affiliated with the Divinity School and its students and alumni, through teaching and speaking opportunities.
  • Exercise independent judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, Title IX and FERPA guidelines.
  • Active involvement in a local Christian congregation.

Education/Experience:

  • A PhD or ThD degree with specialization in Old Testament from a regionally accredited school or school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada is required.
  • A master’s degree in a theological field from a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada is required (MDiv is preferred).
  • Ministry experience preferred.
  • Teaching experience in a college, seminary, or divinity school preferred. Rank will be consistent with the candidate’s experience level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated skill in teaching and mentoring students
  • Capacity for teaching courses in a theological discipline other than Old Testament (e.g., Christian leadership, spiritual formation, preaching, etc.)
  • A demonstrated commitment to and promise for research and writings in the field of Old Testament and its application to the Church both in the west and non-western world
  • Capacity to accompany students from diverse contexts in their theological and vocational formation
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer skills, with the ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology, including teaching online courses (both synchronous and asynchronous)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and common methods of digital communication such as web conferencing, web/text chat
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet set deadlines
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University
