POSITION: Therapist and Trauma Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Counseling Services
STATUS: Full Time (10 Month Position)
The Therapist and Trauma Specialist of Counseling Services provides mental health counseling and specialized trauma treatment for Campbell University students via a stepped care model. Primarily provides counseling for students through initial consultation screenings, intake assessments, short term individual therapy, group therapy, crisis assessments/intervention, and case management. In addition, will be the primary provider for trauma survivors via specialized training (e.g., EMDR, ART, RRT, etc.). Serves as a consultant to other University faculty/staff, students, and parents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide mental health counseling and specialized trauma treatment for Campbell University students. Refer students as appropriate for psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing/evaluation, specialized treatment, and/or long-term therapy.
- Crisis intervention and crisis debriefings as necessary in the event of student, staff, and/or faculty injuries and/or deaths.
- Provide outreach to students re: mental health and trauma concerns. Past recipients of such outreach events include not only the general student body but also groups such as Residence Life staff, Fraternity and Sorority Life members, Athletes, etc.
- Provide outreach services to meet the mental health needs of the University community, including academic support programs, educational workshops, personal skill development groups, consultation, and training programs for faculty and staff.
- Serve as a consultant to other University faculty/staff, students, and parents.
- Prepare and manage client records, progress notes, reports, assessment documents and other necessary documentation in accordance with regulations governing this discipline.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all proprietary information and ensure ethical standards are upheld in the execution of clinical services in compliance with licensure organizations (American Counseling Association, National Association of Social Workers, and NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board), university policies, local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with legal issues including, but not limited to, client confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Collect statistics as required for reports; prepare required reports and paperwork.
- Participate in continuing education to continually improve skills and stay abreast of current technologies/practices.
- Manage forms in our electronic medical record system by keeping the forms updated and create new forms as needed.
- Assist with social media.
- Oversee the creation and implementation of weekly well-being themes in the counseling waiting room and the center’s well-being room with assistance from practicum and internship students when they are present.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position requires periodic evening hours (presentations to residence halls, clubs, organizations; various outreach events).
Clinical Services, including Crisis and Risk Response/Management:
- As needed, serve as a trauma specialist consultant to the Campbell University Behavioral Intervention Team (CUBIT) regarding student behavior of concern, and as a trauma treatment consultant of Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT). Work closely with the Director of Counseling Services who is a member of the CUBIT and CIRT to ensure a collaborative and integrated institutional response to student crises, critical incidents, and student behavior of concern.
- As needed serve as an alternate member of the Prevention and Intervention Team for Student Success (PITSS) for at- risk-students, with responsibilities for monitoring adherence to the team's recommendations for evaluation and treatment. Communicate with student families, the Associate Vice President of Campus Life’s Office, and off-campus mental health professionals as circumstances indicate to support students' safety.
- Provide mental health consultation and referral to university personnel, concerned students, family members, friends, and external agencies regarding students' mental health concerns when appropriate, and with appropriate authorization.
- Coordinate the center's emergency and crisis response procedures. Provide crisis intervention and crisis debriefings, as necessary, in the event of student, staff, and/or faculty injuries and/or deaths.
- Provide education and outreach services to faculty, staff, and students on developmental and psychological topics.
- Direct clinical services to students including triage screening, intake, short-term therapy, group therapy, periodic support groups, emergency response/crisis intervention, and case management services for students.
- Refer students off-campus for psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing/evaluation, specialized treatment, and/or long-term therapy as appropriate.
- Act as consultant to Counseling Services’ staff regarding scope of services, challenging clinical situations, and assessment of risk.
- Collaborate with other university staff to plan and implement various outreach events, including, but not limited to, Student Life activities (i.e. Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and New Student Orientation).
- Serve as a team member of Student Life to cover Student Life and University events such as graduation, banquets, award ceremonies, etc.
- Build effective relationships with academic areas; serve on university committees whose efforts are to support and to improve student life and retention.
- Master’s Degree in clinical counseling, social work, or equivalent field required
- Licensed by appropriate North Carolina mental health licensure board (e.g., NC Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, NC Social Work Board, etc.) preferred
- Clinical license-eligible candidates will be considered for hire, but continued employment will be contingent upon licensure within 18 months (subject to negotiation) of hire
- General trauma treatment certification preferred
- Trauma treatment specialist-eligible candidates will be considered for hire, but continued employment will be contingent upon completion of training within 18 months (subject to negotiation) of hire
- Specific trauma treatment therapy certification (e.g., EMDR, ART, RRT, etc.) preferred
- Minimum 5 years of full-time experience providing psychotherapy for general mental health concerns, preferably with young adult population preferred
- Minimum 3 years of full-time experience providing trauma treatment counseling, preferably with young adult population preferred
- Experience with co-occurring mental health/trauma survivor population required
- Experience utilizing evidenced-based interventions for the treatment of mental health concerns required
- Extensive experience providing crisis intervention required
- Supervisory experience desired
- Experience working in a higher education or non-profit sector desired
- Experience with mandated client populations desired
- Experience working with substance use concerns desired
- Demonstrated competence in group counseling as well as time-limited individual psychotherapy desired
- Demonstrated competence in outreach and prevention program planning and implementation desired
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels
- Well-developed presentation and public speaking capabilities
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize personal and departmental workflow
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point
- Strong computer skills and technologically savvy in the areas of electronic medical records, digital communication and social media
- Ability to work effectively with young adults
- Ability to make quick and accurate clinical assessments
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within a changing environment
- Ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team, and within a diverse group of people.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet set deadlines as necessary
- Ability to adhere to strict, high levels of confidentiality
- Knowledge of ethics and licensure laws and commitment to abide by those regulations
- Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with co-workers, faculty, staff, students, parents, university officials and the public
