Position Summary:

Assists the needs of the Director of Athletic Bands (DOAB) with all marching band productions and leads as the coordinator and director of the Winter Guard.

The Guard Coordinator recruits for the Sound of the Sandhills Athletic Band and Guard program, coordinates student training and on boarding, and assures appropriate material, work, and choreography is accomplished.

To be an in attendance and involved with the preparation and planning of pre-season training camp.

Attendance at all performances.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with actively recruiting for the Athletic Band program achieving recruitment goals both in numbers, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Works with the Director of Athletic Bands in working toward a common successful vision of the color guard and winter guard programs that benefit the mission and goals of Campbell University.
  • Recruits for the Athletic Band and Guard program and coordinates Guard training including building reservations, travel, and space prep.
  • Oversees all aspects of the Campbell University Winter Guards.
  • Designs and produces a show to perform as part of the designated conference affiliation for Winter Guard.
  • Oversee the choreography to all routines, is involved with teaching routines, and is a significant part of rehearsals.
  • Designs flags and equipment for the guard program.
  • Maintains the Guard inventory.
  • In conjunction with the DOAB, oversees the Guard student leadership team.
  • Oversees the Guard programming when summer camps and clinics are offered.
  • Assist with recruiting efforts for the Athletic band program, with a focus on maintaining attrition and growth in the Color/Winter guard program.
  • Assist with all performance events that involved the guard program.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional development and develops professional contacts with colleagues and organizations.
  • Helps to ensure the success of the band by performing all other duties assigned by the Director of Athletic Bands.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, and Information Security, including but not limited to; HIPAA, FERPA and other state and federal mandates.

Education/Experience: 

  • Undergraduate degree with Color Guard and Winter Guard experience.
  • Ability to design/write shows and routines and can demonstrate what is taught if needed.
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit sector desired

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Comprehensive computer skills, with the ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology
  • Familiarity with/Knowledgeable regarding Winter guard, Color Guard, the associations that involved regionally and nation-wide.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and standard methods of digital communication, including web/text/chat platforms
  • Familiarity with utilizing/administering social media platforms
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level university officials and the public.
  • Work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations.
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet strict deadlines
  • Adaptability, flexibility and a willingness to work in a changing environment
  • Ability to work regular evening or weekend hours and occasional travel; including overnight stays.
