Position Summary:

Campbell University Divinity School invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position as the Gay T. and Haskell A. Duncan Chair of Church Music beginning August 2025. This position will give leadership to the Church Music and Worship concentration in the Master of Divinity degree program, the Church Music and Worship specialization in the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry degree program, and the Church Music and Worship certificate program. The appointee will teach nine hours per semester and should be able to teach courses in practical ministry such as Christian leadership or spiritual formation courses in addition to music and worship. Assigned teaching may be in any of the Divinity School’s degree programs; in addition, the appointee may teach courses in collaboration with the undergraduate departments of Music and of Christian Studies. The salary and rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Contract year is nine months. Additional teaching opportunities are possible in the summer for additional compensation.

The appointee must be supportive of the Christian purpose of Campbell University and the mission of the Divinity School to provide Christ-centered, Bible-based, ministry-focused theological education. The appointee must be able to relate to a diversity of denominational traditions represented within the Divinity School student body. Willingness to represent the Divinity School through speaking and teaching engagements in local congregations and with other constituent groups is expected. A commitment to academic excellence and the ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, and staff is expected. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement curriculum in church music and worship, teaching nine hours per semester as assigned; assess participation and performance of students within the classroom; administer exams according to university guidelines; complete student record keeping in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Develop opportunities for collaboration with undergraduate programs in Music and in Christian Studies. Such opportunities may include developing and teaching cross-listed courses, working together to offer special events or conferences, recruiting of students, etc.
  • Advise and mentor students; interact with students in a positive manner, listen effectively, field questions pertaining to subject matter.
  • Assist in recruitment efforts, especially for programs in music and worship.
  • Participate in Divinity School and University committees as assigned; maintain timely communication with administration, staff, and other faculty; participate in faculty and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Exercise independent judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to; Title IX and FERPA guidelines.
  • Active involvement in a local Christian congregation.

Education/Experience:

  • A doctoral degree in church music or related field from a regionally accredited school or school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada is required.
  • A master’s degree in a theological field is required (MDiv is preferred).
  • Ministry experience required.
  • Experience working in a seminary or divinity school preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated skill in teaching and mentoring students in church music and worship
  • Demonstrated skill in planning and facilitating worship in a diversity of styles
  • Demonstrated skill in conducting an ensemble or choir
  • Capacity for teaching in a theological discipline other than church music and worship such as Christian leadership or spiritual formation
  • Capacity to accompany students from diverse contexts in their theological and vocational formation
  • Proficiency in computer skills, with the ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and common methods of digital communication such as web conferencing, web/text chat
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet set deadlines
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
