UNM Behavioral Health at Sandoval Regional Medical Center is seeking a full-time clinical psychologist to work as a vital team member with our primary care Patient-Centered Medical Home. The psychologist provides integrated behavioral health in primary care, including brief assessment and intervention for a wide variety of patients of all ages and implementing clinical care pathways to improve population health.

The psychologist works closely with primary care providers and the family practice team to implement team-based care for a range of mental health, substance abuse and behavioral medicine problems. This position includes rewarding opportunities to supervise learners in psychology and psychiatry. Provides backup coverage as needed to the Psychologist working in the SRMC Bariatric Surgery Program. We are looking for a motivated and committed person who can flexibly respond to the diverse patient needs encountered in the family practice clinic.

 

UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is a community-based academic healthcare facility that is served by both hospital-based UNM Faculty Physicians and community-based independent physicians. UNM SRMC includes 72 acute-care inpatient beds that service two medical/surgical units and an Intensive Care Unit. In addition, SRMC offers a state-of-the-art Radiology & Women's Imaging department, a 24-hour a day/7-days a week Emergency Department, six operating rooms, two procedure rooms, on-site Physical & Occupational Therapy, and Primary Care and Specialty Care Clinics. The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. They should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of the specific duties and prerequisites applicable to individual positions that have been so classified.

Summary

Under general supervision, provides psychological assessment, diagnosis, individual, group, couples, and family therapy, case management services, referral, and follow-up for patients with acute, chronic, or moderate to severe mental disorders, or with psychological/behavioral factors affecting physical health. Provides consultation to clinical staff, other health professionals, and to outside facilities and/or agencies as needed to facilitate care for patients.

Duties and Responsibilities               

  1. Diagnoses or evaluates mental and psychological disorders of individuals and administers programs of treatment; interviews patients in clinics, hospitals, and other settings and studies medical and social case histories.
  2. Observes patients in various situations; selects, administers, and interprets intelligence, personality, or other psychological assessments to diagnose mental disorders and formulate plans of treatment.Provides consultation to other health professionals with regard to assessment results.
  3. Treats psychological disorders to effect improved adjustments utilizing various psychological techniques; selects appropriate treatment approach and plans frequency, intensity, and duration of individual, group, couples, and family therapies.
  4. Assesses patient progress and modifies treatment programs accordingly; communicates with and counsels family members as appropriate.
  5. Documents therapy in accordance with policies and procedures regarding medical records; implements and adheres to policies which ensure patient confidentiality.
  6. Provides crisis assessment and intervention in situations requiring immediate psychological support.
  7. Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings, clinician meetings, staff meetings and workshops to enhance professional development and maintain currency of methodology and techniques.
  8. May instruct and direct psychology students, interns, and postdoctoral trainees serving practicum, internships, and postdoctoral experiences in hospitals and clinics.
  9. Provides psychological consultations to other health professionals within hospitals, clinics, and other community based agencies with regard to clients and/or patient care.
  10. Provides backup coverage to other behavioral health providers as needed.
  11. May develop and implement clinical research programs.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Doctorate degree in Psychology, and completion of Pre-doctoral Clinical Internship with at least 1 year of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. State of NM Licensed Psychologist, or eligibility for NM licensure, as documented by out-of-state licensure. Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required if selected for hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant current psychological methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
  • Ability to assess mental status in clients and to develop individual treatment goals and plans.
  • Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
  • Interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation skills.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be credentialed per UNM Medical Group, Inc., policies and procedures and/or UNM HSC policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Fingerprinting, and subsequent clearance, is required.
  • Must provide proof of varicella & MMR immunity or obtain vaccinations within 90 days of employment.
  • Must obtain annual influenza vaccination.
  • If this position is assigned to a clinical area, successful candidate will be required to complete a pre-placement medical evaluation/health screen.  Required N-95 mask fitting, testing, vaccinations to include annual TST, Tdap, and Hepatitis B will be determined based on location and nature of position.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • Light physical activity. Requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • May require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.
