RI invests in four broad program sectors:  Economic Opportunity, Education, Health, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.  We design our programs to incorporate The RI Way:  local participation, integrated programming, the development of civic skills, and complementary partnerships including with local NGOs, governments, and the private sector.  RI supports solutions that reinforce and improve upon existing in-country systems. Where such systems do not exist or are chronically underperforming, RI’s crisis response lays the foundation for long-term, sustainable change. 


Position Summary.

We are looking for an experienced Communications Officer to join our small and high performing Development & Communications team.  You will be excellent at spotting a story from conversations with our program teams and skilled at teasing out the interviews and imagery to take that story to our audiences. A skilled marketeer happy to get stuck in with implementation of insightful comms as well as contributing to the overall direction of Relief International’s communication campaigns. 

You will work closely with team colleagues, consultants and external agencies both in the UK and USA.  You will also liaise with RI colleagues globally, in differing roles from Country Directors to Communications Focal Points (CFP’s) and other program staff. Highly personable, you will be able to build relations with these colleagues who are in different time zones, from different cultures and who are working to a range of priorities.

This role can be based in USA or UK and can be homebased, or with some days in the office in London or Washington DC each week, depending on COVID-19 restrictions. Some international travel to RI’s countries of operation to gather content may be required post COVID-19.



  • Regularly pitch ideas for new content and content updates to senior members of the department and contribute to the maintenance of planning of a content calendar.
  • Create a regular flow of interviews, statistics, imagery and films from RI programs around the world in the following ways:
  • Build strong working relations with CFPs in RI’s 17 countries of operation and have regular contact about the work in each country.
  • Support the training needs of CFPs who are not necessarily communication experts to build their capacity to provide comms content.
  • Work to develop and implement efficient operating procedures for the flow of content from countries, including managing risk, ethics and consent around content gathering.
  • Commission photo and film gathering, overseeing the process from tendering for photographers to captioning and storing outputs.
  • Gather, vet, condense and otherwise organize content delivered from CFP’s and partners for dissemination through
  • Compose and conduct interviews with RI staff and those in the communities we work alongside in order to gather new content.


Produce a range of content including:

  • Writing strong copy and stories for a range of platforms including the RI website, e-mail campaigns, and social media
  • Simple edits to create films for website and social media
  • Create social media assets – reels, stories etc
  • Commission and oversee outside designers and print processes when required for projects like the Annual Report and larger fundraising campaigns.
  • Support the measurement and performance reporting of all digital marketing initiatives, with a focus on audience engagement, conversions and site traffic. Draw on the department’s data on digital performance to keep senior members of the team informed on what is working and use these insights to continuously refine campaign and email marketing tactics.
  • Support the writing of press releases and media alerts that engage philanthropists, the press, thought leaders, and the general public
  • Manage and optimize our relationship with our outside consultants that post Google Ads to drive traffic to the RI website. Keep them informed of our current and future fundraising campaigns so they can create adwords that relate to the department’s activities at any given time.



This position will require a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a demanding and fast paced environment.

  • BA in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, International Relations or related field
  • Previous experience of donor communications experience working for a nonprofit, media outlet, marketing or ad agency preferably in an international development context
  • Experience with Google Analytics a plus
  • Familiar with online fundraising, email marketing and donation platforms. CRM experience a plus
  • Keen interest in and knowledge of international relief and development or related fields; prior experience working at an international organization strongly preferred
  • A self-starter with demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork
  • Excellent organizational abilities with strong skill managing multiple projects
  • Fast, flexible thinker who is able to shift gears on short notice
  • Willingness to travel overseas to countries where RI has offices and operations
