Consultant (Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, or Washington, D.C.)


Are you a highly motivated, data-driven, creative problem solver with a passion for social change? Join FSG’s consulting team to collaborate with clients across a range of sectors who are working to address complex social problems to produce equitable outcomes at scale.


Consultants are integral members of our consulting team and work on client projects across a variety of issues including education, health, economic mobility, and community development.



Responsibilities: Consultants spend the majority of their time on client projects. You would have the opportunity to work across FSG’s different approaches, areas of focus, and client segments.  


  • Support client projects as a case team member
    • Design efficient, effective, and appropriate research plans
    • Conduct and synthesize accurate, thorough, and timely research; share ideas for ways to improve research plans
    • Conduct rigorous and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis with appropriate consideration of root causes of inequities based on case context
    • Translate findings into informed, data-based insights and client recommendations and communicate perspectives in clear, concise, and compelling ways
    • Collaborate with team members by giving and receiving feedback
    • When needed, assist with project logistics and coordination
  • Contribute to firm-wide learning and development
    • Contribute to knowledge development and peer coaching
    • Support the creation of articles, publications, and blog posts
    • Assist with business development efforts (research and proposals) as needed
    • Contribute to FSG’s culture, including creating an inclusive work environment





2 – 3 years of experience with demonstrated competencies in at least two the following areas:


  • Strategy development or similarly relevant experience (including research, analysis, and synthesis)
    • Primary and secondary research; experience gathering data including perspectives of people more directly and disproportionately impacted by a particular social issue
    • Quantitative and qualitative analysis with demonstrated ability to translate findings into clear and meaningful recommendations
    • Experience applying equity and inclusion principles (e.g. disaggregating data, understanding and analysis of the historical context and root causes for inequities, examining population disparities, identifying targeted strategies based on varying assets/needs, and/or designing culturally appropriate interview guides, etc.)
    • Proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel; ability to organize and analyze datasets, and create charts/graphs
  • Client service or similarly relevant experience advising stakeholders
    • Excellent communication skills; ability to convey a point of view in a concise and structured way and influence stakeholders to action through storytelling and data
    • Efficient time and task management skills; ability to balance multiple priorities, focus on details, and work quickly and efficiently to meet deadlines    
    • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Social Sector
    • Exposure  to one or more of the following issue areas: education, health, economic mobility, and community development
    • Demonstrated commitment to our mission of social change; experience working in the social sector preferred
    • Interest in one or more of FSG’s primary approaches (catalytic philanthropy, collective impact, shared value, and systems change)


Undergraduate degree with demonstration of analytical and quantitative coursework

Ability to travel domestically or internationally ~25-35% of the time (travel requirement varies by project)*



Position:  Consultant positions are available in FSG’s Boston, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. offices.* This is a full-time role. At this time, the starting salary for Consultant roles is $66,500. Salaries are set according to an explicit compensation policy, and relevant market data is analyzed when setting salaries for each role. We also offer a generous benefits package including: health insurance with 100% of premiums covered by FSG, 3 weeks paid vacation, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, cell phone stipend, disability and life insurance, and more.


The Consultant position offers opportunity for advancement, pending performance, to the following roles within FSG’s consulting team: Senior Consultant, Associate Director, Director, and Managing Director.



Note: Visa sponsorship is not available for our US offices. In addition, we are unable to support the OPT Training Visa, as this visa will eventually require sponsorship.



*FSG’s US offices are currently closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Employees are working virtually and no travel is expected through at least the remainder of 2020. We will continue to monitor the situation with the health and safety of our staff at the forefront. FSG is offering a variety of technological and well-being resources to support our people as we navigate our current environment together.
