Senior Consultant (Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, or Washington, D.C.)

Senior Consultants support client projects across a variety of issues including education, health, economic mobility, and community development. Senior Consultants start as individual contributors in a “case team member” role and work toward becoming a “case team leader” during the course of their tenure as a Senior Consultant.


FSG is seeking candidates available in the near term as well as late summer / early fall 2021 for candidates currently completing graduate programs.



Responsibilities: Senior Consultants spend the majority of their time on client projects. You would have the opportunity to work across FSG’s different approaches, areas of focus, and client segments.


  • Initially, support client projects as a case team member
    • Design efficient, effective, and appropriate research plans
    • Independently conduct and synthesize accurate, thorough, and timely research; facilitate interviews with clients and stakeholders
    • Lead rigorous and accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis with appropriate consideration of root causes of inequities based on the case context
    • Translate findings into informed, data-based insights and client recommendations and communicate perspectives in clear, concise, and compelling ways
    • Collaborate with team members by giving and receiving feedback; provide coaching and mentorship to teammates as needed
    • When needed, assist with project logistics and coordination
  • Over time, transition to managing client projects as a case team leader
    • Develop and execute project plans, including managing timelines, workplans, deliverables, and leading team meetings
    • Coach and develop team members
    • Partner with Director or Managing Director to manage client relationships
  • Contribute to firm-wide learning and development
    • Contribute to knowledge development and peer coaching
    • Support the creation of articles, publications, and blog posts
    • Assist with business development efforts (research and proposals) as needed
    • Contribute to FSG’s culture, including creating an inclusive work environment





3 – 5 years of experience with demonstrated competencies in at least three of following areas:


  • Strategy development or similarly relevant experience (including research, analysis, and synthesis)
    • Development of primary and secondary research plans; experience gathering data including perspectives of people more directly and disproportionately impacted by a particular social issue
    • Quantitative and qualitative analysis with demonstrated ability to translate findings into clear and meaningful recommendations
    • Experience applying equity and inclusion principles (e.g. disaggregating data, understanding and analysis of historical context and root causes for inequities, examining population disparities, identifying targeted strategies based on varying assets/needs, and/or designing culturally appropriate interview guides, etc.)
    • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel; ability to organize and analyze datasets, create charts/graphs, and develop models
  • Client service or similarly relevant experience advising stakeholders
    • Ability to convey a point of view in a concise and structured way; influence key stakeholders to action through storytelling and data
    • Strong time management and project planning skills; ability to multitask and work quickly and efficiently to meet project and client deadlines    
    • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Facilitation
    • Experience facilitating inclusive and culturally appropriate conversations with a range of stakeholders across organizations, levels, geographies, and sectors, etc.
    • Experience designing meetings and workshops that engage the full range of participants and elicit input from all stakeholders, especially from people whose voices may be more commonly marginalized
  • Social Sector
    • Experience in one or more of the following issue areas: education, health, economic mobility, and community development
    • Demonstrated commitment to our mission of social change; experience working in the social sector preferred
    • Interest in one or more of FSG’s primary approaches (catalytic philanthropy, collective impact, shared value, systems change)


Graduate degree or final year graduate student (e.g., MBA, MPA, MPH, MPP, or other relevant degree) preferred

Ability to travel domestically or internationally ~25-35% of the time (travel requirement varies by project)*



Position: Senior Consultant positions are available in FSG’s Boston, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. offices.* This is a full-time role. At this time, the starting salary for Senior Consultant roles is $96,000. Salaries are set according to an explicit compensation policy, and relevant market data is analyzed when setting salaries for each role. We also offer a generous benefits package including: health insurance with 100% of premiums covered by FSG, 3 weeks paid vacation, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, cell phone stipend, disability and life insurance, and more.


The Senior Consultant position offers opportunity for advancement, pending performance, to the following roles within FSG’s consulting team: Associate Director, Director, and Managing Director.



Note: Visa sponsorship is not available for our US offices. In addition, we are unable to support the OPT Training Visa, as this visa will eventually require sponsorship.


*FSG’s US offices are currently closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Employees are working virtually and no travel is expected through at least the remainder of 2020. We will continue to monitor the situation with the health and safety of our staff at the forefront. FSG is offering a variety of technological and well-being resources to support our people as we navigate our current environment together.
